ROOFS OF DUBROVNIK II — SHIP AHOY

In the past I’ve sent photos taken in Croatia — in Split and Trogir, including Green Net — Red Boat. But the real jewel in the crown of the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia is Dubrovnik. This is now a second image posted from Dubrovnik, but unlike the first, it shows the Adriatic as well as a Windjammer ship anchored near the horizon — both missing in the previous shot.

Historically, it is known that as far back as the Stone Age, this region was inhabited. During the early Christian era a village flourished on top of a nearby mountains. The term “old town” refers to a settlement that was established at Dubrovnik in the 7th century, and which since the medieval times has been a walled city. It is possible to climb to the top of the massive walls and see the city from the level of the roofs. It costs 20 Croatian Kuna (HRK), or between three and four dollars for the opportunity do the perimeter of the city. The views are spectacular, but the 90-minute walk can be an exhausting venture — especially in the hottest days of the summer. The views include the spectacular Adriatic sea, and the countless medieval buildings. During the civil war fought between the Croatians and the Serbs in 1991, many of the roofs were destroyed by shells lobbed over the hills. The brighter colored roof represent the ones that were damaged and subsequently restored.

Nikon D70, 18-70 mm Nikkor lens, tripod. I've rushed to post this after the last photo, "Gardens of Brown's Castle," that I submitted just yesterday. In retrospect the focus was much too soft in that photo, but too many friends had already reviewed it for me to discard it. And even in this image a longer depth of field would have helped. Midday is not a good time to shoot photographs.

Hi, Master,
As usual, very nice POV. I also like the composition, too. The ship is a good element too.
Keep up that way.

Hej Bulent,
Another gorgeous view over the roofs of Dubrovnik. I love to see the repetition of the many roof tiles with their attractive colour. The view of the sea and the mountain slopes in the background is lovely too and the light is pleasing. Well done!

Excellent vertical frame. Interesting note, as well. Superb summer mood.

Hello Bulent,
I like this nuance of the red-orange colours, plenty of details to keep the eye busy. Superb contrasts with luxurious vegetation and seascape in the background and thanks so much for such an informative note.

Hi Bulent!

Excellent vertical framing for this magnificent view! The composition is also excellent with these beautiful rooftops playing an important role and leading the eye to the ship leaving. Congratulations!

Hercules

Hello Bulent,
A very nice and carefully achieved composition, as usual from you. The idea of the ship leaving this town of red roofs and surely amazing views of the ocean works very well.
I have finaly got to read your 'Math and the Mona Lisa', and I must say that I really enjoyed it and learned a lot from it; now I recomend it to my friends.
Take care,
Daniel

Hello Bulent,

Excellent POV that allow a view of these colorfull roofs from many different angels. The orange colors is clearly seen with wonderfully sharp details to the intricate roof design. Background fantastic with the sea and boat.

Filipe

hello Bulent, friend,
the shot is marvelous, the point of view is great, the details like the roofs and the ship is fantastic and made the composition very good. technical I see some pixelnoise in the sky. This can be easy repair by a dusk tool. A shame for this fantastic photojob, because the composition is so perfect.

Hey Bulent.
Dubrovnik is a place a must visit. Very good composition. The leaving ship is a great focal point. Well done.

Jeff.

A nice composition Bulent. I really like the red of the roofs against the blue of the water backed up with the lighter shade of blue in the sky. Great catch in the boat in the harbor and a good eye to compose around it. A little grainy, but this is offsetted a little by the detail and sharpness in the roof tiles. A good looking shot.

Nice work.

Bonjour, mon ami Bulent,

Hello dear Bulent,

You show us a very nice image about the rooftops, this with a wonderful sharpness and clarity. Also the sailship in background is very nice.
I hope dear Bulent that you appreciate that I make a WS alone for the a lot grainy in the sky. Thanks for sharing.

Have a nice day,
John.

Hi Bulent,
Lovely combination of this (if I count well) four master and the old renowned town of Dubrovnic. Excellent point of view and through that a good composition of red and blue.

Merhaba Bulent,
You are right in that depth of field is not adequate to render the ship sharp enough. But the focus also seems to be at the very front roof. I also detect what I think is jpeg artifacts. Saving closer to 200 KB may help with these. I would also increase contrast and play with highlight/shadow control on PS. Putting these technicalities aside, I like the composition in which the eye is subtly led from the roofs to the ship.
Best wishes,
Hakan

Hi Bulent. I like this shot as the POV across the iconic red rooves next to the blue sea looks very good. Interesting notes as always. TFS. Murray.

Sessiz Gemi.....

Artık demir almak günü gelmişse zamandan
Meçhûle giden bir gemi kalkar bu limandan.

Hiç yolcusu yokmuş gibi sessizce alır yol;

Hello Bulent:

Thank you for criticizing positively one of my photos.
It has motivated that was visiting your gallery of photos and I could have verified that you have a few very good works. Congratulations.

The photo that you present has an excellent perspective and a few colors that confirm(resist) the red one of the roofs with the blue of the sea what does that the panoramic one turns out to be attractive. A good work and made good.

Cordial regards
Josep

Hi Bulent, great POV, beutiful view of lovely roofs and splendid sea, wonderful light and colors, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Bulent,

You visited Dubrovnik in a better day than me. Nice composition, excellent light, colors and details.

Have a nice weekend

Hocam,
Kiremitlerin dizilişi, çatıların temizliği(bizde her çatı çanak antenlerle dolu, pencerelerin varlığı ile güzel bir görünüm. Elinize sağlık, iyi bir haftasonu dilerim.

Hi Bulent,
A fine view, with the roofs well seen and providing good contrast with the upper half of the frame. I like the clarity of detail and fine lighting management. The ship certainly balances and provides an entirely separate scene. Thanks for the fine note.

Hello Professor "A"
A nice view over the rooftops offering good contrast in colour between the colour of the tiles & the blue sea. The compo. is good & the ship is in good position in the frame. I seem to notice some pixellation in the sky & some noise in the sea. These can easily be removed by PP...maybe you may push up the contrasts of these areas a bit too. Hope you don't mind my nitpicking of this otherwise wonderful shot!
Warmest Regards
Angshuman

Red roofs and in the end the sea. A picture that I love.
A marvellous composition by you Bulent, pleasure for the eyes.
The excellently light and colours give the stain from a typical Mediterranean place, near to the sea.
Very well done.
My best regards
Kostas

Hello Bülent,
I still remember your photos shot in this town that you posted earlier. You made a wonderful compo with those roofs and the bay on the bg. The sailing ship is welcome bonus.
I regret a bit that haze that provoked so much noise and, I imagine, didn't let you pull up the saturation a bit.
Regards, José.

Hello Prof. Atalay,

This is a wonderful top view. I like the way you have framed this one. The roofs of houses gradually taking our eyes towards the sea. The jump from the orange tiles to the deep blue ocean is very nice. Wonderful one.

Sayan

Hello Bulent,
I had hear about the beauty of the roofs of Dubrovnik and your picture is just confirming it . But I would like to draw your attention about the use of a good quality polarizing filter which in my my opinion would increase the beauty of this picture: UV filters are mostly protective devices and don't really help to improve visible light.

I also wish you an excellent Sunday - Izzet

Bulent,
the digital quality of the shot is certainly not at its best with a lot of noise/artifacts/pixelation, but the view and composition with that magnificent sailing boat is simply great. Any idea why you got this poor quality? Is this a crop from a larger picture? You certainly could have explored better the amount of bytes and got closer the the suported 200kb.
Regards, Peter

Hello Bulent,
I like very much this superb view. Many elements here for a successful lovely result. Excellent POV!
