Photographer’s Note

These are tombstones at the Jewish cemetery near Zadní Vydří, a village between the towns of Telč and Dačice.

The cemetery is in the middle of the forest, some 150 meters from the road connecting the villages of Myslůvka and Kostelní Vydří. It was probably established in the 16th century to serve the Telč Jewish community. At that time, Jewish burrials were not permitted on the lands of the Telč estate, which is why the cemetery was founded in the Dačice estate, literally meters from the border of the two estates.

The oldest legible tombstone is dated 1655. The cemetery was used until 1879, when a new Jewisth cemetery was set up just outside of Telč. Unique Baroque and Classicist tombstones can be seen at the cemetery. It was seriously damaged by the Nazis, and during the communist era, it was not maintained and became overgrown with forest vegetation. In recent years, the Jewish community has been cleaning it up, repairing the walls and gate of the compound and re-erecting fallen tombstones.
