Whilst the word “Nyhavn” means New Harbour, this area is in fact one of the oldest parts of Copenhagen harbour. The canal was built in the 1670’s by King Christian V so that goods offloaded from ships could more easily be delivered to the nearby Kongens Nytorv (King’s Square). At one time Nyhavn developed a bad reputation because of all the sailors concentrated in the area, and the northern side of the canal is still referred to as the “naughty side”.
Today the canal is a popular destination for both tourists and locals. Appropriately the northern side, which also happens to be the sunny side, is lined with bars and restaurants and in good weather the quay side is packed with visitors. Even the edge of the canal is becomes economy class seating, a somewhat hazardous occupation when things get festive!
My picture was taken at around 9:30 in the evening, when dusk started to fall and the “naughty side” began to live up to its reputation. |
