Photographer’s Note
...here you see Gavnoe castle from the park...
In case you missed my note to my previous photo , I can tell you , that Gavnoe island in the 12-hundreds belonged to king Valdemar Sejr ( sejr means victory ).
According to a document from 1231 there was a
"house" on Gavnoe at that time . Most likely it was an armed castle to protect from the Wends. The castle might also have served as a base for buccanering in the fjord area .
When Queen Margrete the 1.st acquired the island in 1398 , she had the "house" demolished and built a convent and a church . So she laid the foundation stone to the estate which during the next 300 years was extended to a two storey building with three wings.
In 1756 , the then owner , count otto Thott added yet another storey .
So the massive medieval castle was converted into a three wing rococo castle .
In 1774 the entailed estate Reedtz-Thott was established . Since then Gavnoe belongs to this family.

Hallo Dorte!
I like this one especially because of the wonderful colours and the beautiful light. I like this castle because it isn't too pretentious like many others. One can see - a wonderful place ... (The foreground in this picture perhaps is a bit too dark but the building is very well exposed).
Greetings from hot and sunny Westphalia - and have a nice weekend.
