Photographer’s Note

Kalø Castle is supposed to have been built in 1313 on an island by the east coast of Jutland. In the same year they also built a dam to this island; both the dam and the castle probably are founded by Erik Menved after a demonstration of local farmers.

The dam is 500 meter, and was at that time one of the biggest roadconstructions of Denmark. You can see the last part of the dam on my photo.

The castle was already demolished in 1320 by Christopher the II (he promised that to nobility), but rebuilt by King Valdermar Atterdag after 1343 and than it served as a feudale castle under the Crown until 1660.

From 1518 to 1519 Gustav Vasa, who was later to become king of Sweden, was kept hostage at Kalø Castle.

In 1672 the buildings were demolished by king Frederik the III, but large parts of them remain as ruin. Finally in 1903, the ruin was restaurated.

The castle is really easy to reach from Århus with bus 123.

About the picture:
I took about 100 photo’s here; unfortunately not all very sharp. The weatherconditions weren’t that good, but this one was one of the bests. No really deep colours, but the lines and the silver shine on the water make that up. Maybe I will post some more photo’s of this ruine later.

I rotated it, decreased the light a bit, cropped a bit of the top bottum and the left, and increased the contrasts and the sharpness somewhat.
