Algae growth on the southern part of Baltic Sea during midsummer. Seeing this with own eyes was really strange. Algae gave strong 3D impression to sea surface. Lines visible across the scene were left by ships.

Baltic Sea is particularly vulnerable of it's ecology. The sea is shallow, connects to Atlantic through narrow straits of Denmark. And is surrounded by countries with heavy industry and agriculture.

Adjusted colours and increased contrast to compensate haze.

Excellent, beautiful and interesting image Kari, the pattern of algae is fantastic and lines created from ships too, well seen and done, compliments.

Hi Kari,
Well this is doubtlessly a LATW(*) photo! ;o)
Despite the haze and the limit vision though the plane window, you've managed a well composed documentary shot. The algae are clearly visible and I'm impressed by the dark lines left by passing boats... I've never seen anything like this before. The island at the top of the picture also contributes to giving an idea of the scale.
Have a nice evening.
Brigitte

Great capture Kari , at first seen I thought the boats have broken ice , reading the note I realized ... , interesting view , well seen and done.
Stefano.

This is certainly strange, the water looks more like land than water, making the appearance of the island very bizarre, good catch.

Absolutely amazing. The same phenomenom exists on the French canal system. High temperatures, excessive use of phosphates in agriculture and diminishing traffic accelerate growth of algae and renders shhipping almost impossible on some of the canals. I was not aware that this was also the case in the Baltic. TFS.

Thanks for posting this shot.
A horrid state of the affairs that seems to go unnoticed in most of the world. It is sad to see the sea die like that.
I miss those summer days and nights spent without a care on the shores of Finland... nowadays I think twice when visiting and having the opportunity to go swim in the sea.
Excellent shot, keeping the scale of things in place thanks to the inclusion of the island and the aeroplane window. Excellent framing and brilliant choice for everything.
TFS this important shot!
