[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
From 1946 to 1989 the island of Saaremaa was a restricted zone, closed to foreigners and most Estonians because of its strategic location at the western border of the Soviet Empire.

There are still remnants of this Soviet occupation, in the form of watchtowers along the coast.

This particular tower at Toomalõuka has been partially burned. Perhaps by vandals, or perhaps it was the centre of some Midsummer celebration.

It is still possible to climb part way up the tower, but the upper wooden parts have been damaged. It is interesting that they saved a few rubles using wood instead of steel for some of the supports, so it took much less damage to render the tower unusable.

After climbing part way up the tower, I was able to shoot up through the burnt structure to obtain this interesting POV.

On a personal note, my grandfather was born near here.
