| [Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe |
I was only in Tallinn for 3 days, and it was real luck that the third day had great sunshine. I really like the way the sun and clouds combined on this shot.
Pikk Jalg is a street that runs from Toompea, the upper part of the Old Town (where the nobility used to live) down to the main, flatter part of old Tallinn. I've been trying to figure out the name of the church spire in this shot - it dominates the landscape - but so far, no luck. Anyone know?
Technical: In RAW, minor temperature adjustments. In CS3, slight raising of midtones in Levels, and High Pass sharpening (minimal). Minor cropping to correct a slight tilt in the steeple.
Side technical note: Since I have started using the Nikon D80, with in-camera sharpening set to +2, I find that, for many (but by no means all) photos, I don't have to do much post-processing sharpening at all.
UPDATE: The spire is part of St. Olaf's Church, first mentioned in 1267. It was renovated in the XVI century, after which it had some claim to being the tallest building in Europe (159 m - 524 feet). |

Nice composition with perfect lighting to highlight the steeple.
You indicated that you had adjusted the tilt of the steeple, but on my monitor, I still see a slight tilt to the right. Also, do you think cropping out more of the clump of tree branches on the left and perhaps more of the bottom part of the picture will help to focus the picture on the steeple?
I do like the quaint street lamps included at the bottom right.
I wish I can retire soon too to travel as extensively as you have. But I am getting there ...
The differences in light values can't have been easy to manage, but the exposure of the bright part is spot on and we can still see plenty of detail in the shadows, like that fascinating line of lamps. I like the off-centred composition of the steeple and the light dusting of snow on the rooftops is an added bonus for the overall success of the image.
It's interesting what you say about setting in-camera sharpness. I have all in-camera settings at "normal" as I was told by an experienced photographer that as soon as you shoot in RAW, any in-camera settings are over-rided. I didn't do any tests to see if he is right. Mind you he is a Canon user!

Yes,the combination of the clouds and the blue sky is beautiful
And the tower almost in the center is impressive
A nice evening
