Photographer’s Note

M/S Amorella approaching port of Mariehamn, the capital of Åland Islands. Amorella was built in Split, Croatia, and started her service in 1988. High PoV was provided by the sun deck of M/S Silja Europa, the largest cruise ferry on the Baltic Sea.

When tax-free sales within European Union were abolished, autonomous Åland Islands opted out of the deal making Åland a separate tax zone. This allows tax-free sales on ships that visit ports of Åland. As a result the port is quite busy. Passenger capasity of daily visiting ships exceeds the population of Mariehamn.

Hallo Kari!
What a sight - especially for a landlubber! The quality of this photo really is amazing, even small details are visible. The (difficult) exposition is excellent and the chosen angle here works very well. A truly worth-seeing ship and photo as well!

The shot is perhaps not too original, but the view from behind enhances the dynamism of the scene and the colors are beautiful to see.

I've been travelling bith both, I prefer Silja... but from a photo point of view viking has the advantage of this nice flashing red that offers superb contrast against the whites, very well exposed image and good dynamic angle

Beautiful shot, chose a nice angle that she looks most attractive in the perfect lighting. An excellent rendition of white brings a nice luminous impression.

Wonderful capture of this impressive ocean linner.
Striking contrast between the red and white of this beauty and of course she stands out brilliantly against the lovely blue sky.

Hi Kari,
although I do not care much about these modern ferries I must admit that from your angle she really looks smart. It is the excellent management of the light and the deep red that makes this image very attractive. I also like the title very much. TFS!

Hi Kari,

After seeing many signs of the Viking cycle trail in Kent, England this is a much more impressive expression of the Viking trademark.
Once I was for a few moment in Mariahamn with the Silja Line, but I didn’t see anything of Åland for it was raining cats and dogs.
