Photographer's Note

Lake Pihlajavesi forms part of the larger lake Saimaa lake system in eastern Finland. Lake Pihjalavesi is the second largest bassin in the vaste Saimaa system and thus the sixth largest lake in Finland. It lacks for most parts large open waters as it is dotted with thousands of islands. Its average depth is 11m only but the water is of outstanding quality and easily drinkable.
One particularity of lake Saimaa system is the presence of a rare sweet water seal species. The Saimaa ringed seal was cut of from the Baltic some 6'000 years ago and only around 310 specimen survive today. Due to intensive protection programs, the number is rising again since a all time low in the 80ties.
