Photographer’s Note

I woke up early that morning, unable to wait for the greatest journey of my life so far. Even though the plane was leaving around noon I was at the airport by 9:40. I took the plane from Budapest to Helsinki, and yet another one from Helsinki to Ivalo. I broke through a thick layer of clouds and caught sight of an endless and almost lifeless landscape, the home of vast Nordic forests. Here's a lake, there's a playful river. Budapest 30 Celsius degrees, Helsinki 27, Ivalo 8. That's how North it was :-). And yet I didn't stop there. Let's take the bus to Inari, my end station, 40 kilometres away from the airport (which was rather like a small wooden hut, also on the inside, decorated with heads of hunted animals :-)). I saw my first reindeer 10 minutes after landing from the bus. And not so much later I arrived to the lake Inari. By now it was 10.30 PM but I stayed out till over midnight. That's when it was this light, with ever-changing colours and lighting conditions. This was the most fragile moment. I never saw the sun again. It had disappeared for 3 days. But those few minutes meant the world to me. And that boat in the background which was floating and rocking gently back and forth on the sparkling waters. What else do you just need?
