Cupolas

Two cupolas in winter twilight. The one in the foreground contains one of those stone fountains where a perfectly spherical stone rotates on top of water layer. Naturally such artwork has to be protected of Finnish winter climate.
Background cupola is the roof of the main library of Tampere, nicknamed 'Metso'. It was opened in 1986, architects were Raili and Reima Pietilä who have also designed many other public buildings of Tampere. |

Kari,
not necesarily the most attractive shot in your gallery and yet it fullfills TE criteria by learning something about the Finland. I learned that it is freezing cold and you even have to protect certain structures and water fountains from the cold, otherwise the it bursts and gets lost. Nice to see that it isn't just a blue or yellow plastic coverage, but a quite artistic glas cupola. :-)

Hi Kari,
Such strange element. I was attracted by my curiosity to know what was that? A kind of modern igloo? The last model of winter camping tents?... The last thing I would imagne it was a fountain protection!
Cheers,
Flavia

Hi Kari, I find this one very interesting. I come from Canada, and have experienced my share of the cold, but we've never used (at least I've never seen) anything like this. So is this a temporary protection to be taken down in the spring? It's clouded now, but can the fountain be seen through it in the winter? Just how cold does it get in Tampere, where one of these would be used? Okay, enough questions. Enjoyed!
Thanks, John
