The Opera Theatre of Clermont-Ferrand (formerly the Municipal Opera) is located in the heart of the city, on Boulevard Desaix (main entrance, seen here on the right) and Place Jaude. It was built between 1891 and 1894 at the instigation of the municipality under the leadership of Amédée Gasquet. The work was led by the architect Jean Teilhard.

The building was installed in place of the old Halle aux toiles, dating from the early nineteenth century. It was intended to replace the old theatre of the Place Royale, by then deemed too small.

Many architectural similarities suggest that Teilhard was largely inspired by the Opera Garnier in Paris . The decoration of the facade was realised by Henri Gourgouillon.
