| The liberty statue belongs to the most famous sculptures of the world. It is the symbol of the USA absolutely, the city New York is not conceivable without it. Its creator Frédéric Augusts Bartholdi was born 1834 in Colmar /Alsace and is a sculptor, whose works are by far more well-known today as its name. Also is is second artwork of gigantic lengths and the historic emblem becomes: the twelve meters high "lion of Belfort" looks how indications of the opposition of the French against the German siege into the French-German war of 1870/ 71. Three months long, in the winter, the city Belfort of the German siege resisted 1870. The inscription addresses itself to the defenders of Belfort. But it is not a message to the Germans. The lion closes the back for Germany and looks into the south. It is not aggressive. The only symbol that the strength of the enemy is destroyed broken lightning under its paw. Bartholdis of two gigantic mains fit into no museum. They are expression of the boundlessness, a progress faith from that 19. Century, which seems outdated long. It created it about at the same time, and no larger contrast is possible nevertheless: On the one hand the concern around the degraded homeland, the mourning around Elsass Lorraine, and at the same time the vision of the large one, the USA, the idea of universal liberty and democracy. While the lion corresponds to a micro event of history, the statue embodies a philosophical ideal. Bartholdi lived in a tension between love of the land and universalism. The lion from Belfort was officially never inaugurated. It is, in order not to provoke the Germans, or from displacement of the memory to the time, when Frenchmen and Germans were not only friends. The lion in the course of the years to the anti-German symbol and Belfort to the national place of pilgrimage became nevertheless. |

Une vue inhabituelle du Lion de Belfort que l'on voit le plus souvent sur sa grande largeur. Je me permets toutefois un tout petit conseil : tu devrais accompagner tes photos d'un petit commentaire, il canalise souvent l'intérèt autant que la photo elle-même. Un truc simple, du style que le Lion à été érigé en telle année, à la mémoire de la résistance héroïque de la ville de Belfort face aux troupes prussiennes pendant la guerre de 1870. Ta photo s'adresse à la planète entière et ce genre de détail échappe à 90% de la communauté TE. A toi de voir...
