[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
An algae covered caisson lies on Gold Beach at Arromanches, the middle section of the D-Day invasion of June 6, 1944. The caisson is a remnant of an artificial Mulberry Harbour, which was a prefabricated concrete dock floated across the Channel on the morning of the invasion to protect the landing of 2,500,000 men and 500,000 vehicles - the brainchild of Winston Churchill.

Part of the Mulberry Harbour still lies offshore, while other fragments such as this one have become detached and beached in the sand. The other Mulberry dock in 1944 was towed further west to Omaha Beach and was unfortunately destroyed by a ferocious storm within weeks of the invasion.

Arromanches itself is a colourful town, where the flags of several nations often line the main street and there are lively bars and brasseries. In the WS children play ball near other caissons that have floated ashore. A feeling of peace and goodwill prevails.

John,

Exactly what type of photos I like to see here, fine shot and fine note. I want to say the shot is plain but it isn't it is very compelling, well seen.

Most of the people wouldn't even notice. You took a great picture and explained where it came from.
That's the main difference between a spectator and an actor.

Hi John...this is a nice picture with great tones and colors. The history gives the picture depth...

Hi John,

Very interesting historical register. Great composition, perfect angle. Nice colors, light and details. Well done.

Hi John.

Minimalistic, I like that. For me simplifying the scene is the most difficult part of photography. I rarely manage it.

Just my opinion, but perhaps the sky is a bit to bright , especially on the left side where the sun brightened the clouds.

Hi JOhn
This is such a simple yet effective subject. The sky gives a wonderful atmosphere while the diffuse sunlight creates vivid colours. The interesting note adds to the compelling message of the image.

Nice picture and an excellent note. Colors are great as well.

Minimalist images such as this one are not easy to do, but you have pulled it off very well. Your excellent note is the perfect accompaniment, making the dark sky very appropriate. I also enjoyed your WS. Children playing so close to such an important part of Europe's history is very poignant somehow.

Great continuation of your french series. Once again your picture carries so well the inherent atmosphere of these long beaches of Normandy. You were clearly not lucky with the weather, but this was a blessing for this picture. The perfect atmosphere for the place. An excellent one.

Hi John

Nice simple, well composed shot, sharing an important part of history. I like the WS, strange to think of children playing on the spot of such fighting 63 years ago. Good work

Bonjour John
Très beau cliché avec une météo qui n'a pas l'air extra mais qui donne de belles couleurs douces. C'est très bien cadré.
Bravo - merci pour le partage et bon week-end.

John,
Yu composed perfectly with the colors in this one. The result is an eyecatcher and balanced picture.
Amazing job,

Hi John,
such an impressing image ... it works even well without any information. It works for itself. Nevertheless an intresting note.
I love the wide view to the horizon and the atmosphere created by the emptiness.

Hello John, a photograph of quality in the field of the lights and a very clear prospect on the level for the colors and setting in image, the wild beauty of the place is impeccably proportioned there, I appreciate the use of this weather and from this sky leaded by these clouds which was to resemble somewhat to date of June 6, 1944 or the yankees came to save Europe, calms it foreground of the photograph with the box and the remainder of an artificial harbour is opposed well has this tormented sky, sincerely.............Hello John, une photo de qualité sur le plan des lumières et une perspective très claire au niveau des couleurs et de la mise en image, la beauté sauvage de l’endroit y est impeccablement dosée, j’apprécie l’utilisation de cette météo et de ce ciel plombé par ces nuages qui devait ressembler quelque peu à ce jour du 6 juin 1944 ou les ricains sont venu sauver l’Europe, le calme du premier plan de la photo avec le caisson et le reste d'un port artificiel s'oppose bien a ce ciel tourmenté,

Bonjour John,

Hi John,
very good and interesting note for this piece of history. The perspective is very good and the colours are nice, especially the crispy green of the algae. Tfs this and that in the WS, which is also very nice and of a great impact and contrast between the war remains of the past and the peacefully playing kids of present times.
Best wishes.

John bonsoir.
C'est une très belle photo de ce qu'il reste de ce D-Day. J'aime ce ciel gris et ce sable blond qui fait un cadre à cette relique d'un grand jour où tant de jeunes gars sont tombés pour libérer l'Europe d'un cauchemar.

Hi John.

Someone walking alone in this beach would be a very nice element. However this photo doesn't need it because it's very good by itself. It has a very good atmosphere and I love it. Great exposure and light.

Well done.

Beautiful John, this almost minimalist beachscape. While takin' in the nice green-beige contrast and appreciating the graphic contrast between the angular caisson and the beach with its infinite perpective, my mind moved to the things that went down here.
Thanx for the WS too, a very evocative set. Great work.

Hi John. These kind of remains are quite numerous in the region. The way you picture it here gives a feeling of emptiness that goes well with the subject. On the other hand, the workshop gives us a good idea on how big this thing really is. Nice work, good note.

Belle photo de ce fragment d' histoire, belle étendue, belles couleurs et jolie vue sur ce que votre nature qui reprend ses droits fait de ce reste d' histoire. Amitiés Thomas

The emptiness of the beach was key to the shot's success, and the dark heavy sky and dull light works well too.
I like how you isolated this fragment of the harbour, although it might have been an idea to include a bit more of the beach on the right.
All in all I think this is an excellent shot. One thing though - the bright patch of sky at top left really needs to go, either by cropping or if you wanted to keep the same proportion of sky, by cloning it out. It's just that it breaks up the darkness in the rest of the sky.
It might have been an idea to use an ND grad at the time of shooting to stop it happening in the first place.
Other than that - good work John.

Cheers,
Ben

Hi John,
If this doesn't bring history to life , I don't know what does. The workshop photo with the children playing ball in front of the caisson shows a changed world. Hi John. So hard to choose which shot to comment on in your wonderful gallery. i chose this one today for its haunting qualities, especially when one realizes what the structure is. the stillness, peace on the day accentuates the horror of the events that took place there more than an avalanche of words could do. regards.
