Photographer's Note

Although distant from the sea about 15 Km away, Caen is an estuary port since the Middle Ages. The bassin Saint Pierre has 160 rings equipped for pleasure boats. It is situated at the foot of the William the conqueror castle, in an urban setting where abound pubs and restaurants. Siltation of the Odon river, but especially the constraints of the modern river traffic, led to the digging of a canal between Caen and Ouistreham and its inauguration in 1857
