Photographer’s Note

The cemetery at Devils Island is fenced in in the forested area of the island. Out of curiosity I went to the area. I was surprized to see that the tombstone markers shows only women and children. Most of the children died at age three years old and below. The women and children lying there are wives and children of prison officers. Surprizingly there are no men buried there. Are they just thrown out to sea. This particular tomb has this written on the tombstone:

Decedele 10 Marst 1906
Al Age de 27 Mois
