Photographer’s Note
To Kath Featherstone who admires Captain Cook.
Point of Venus beach.
This lovely black sand beach with calm waters was named so because the Captain James Cook and the scientists had a mission: to observe the transit of the planet Venus across the sun in 1769 in this place.
In April 1769 after an eight months journey James Cook, commanding the Endeavour, arrived at Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus for the Royal Society. To secure his temporary observatory he constructed a fort at a northern promontory called Point Venus. On the day of the transit the sky was clear and Cook could observe the whole transit, assisted by Joseph Banks and astronomer Charles Green. There is a monument close to the lighthouse at Point Venus to commemorate Cook’s observation, but the plaque has been stolen and never replaced.
In the WS the Monument that marks the spot on Venus Point, Tahiti where the observations of the Transit of Venus were conducted in 1769.

P.S. portuguese version
Praia Venus Point.

Hello Leonor,
So far I thought all beaches in Tahiti had white sand. Beautiful picture of this black sand strip between the blue sky and the blue sea.
Well composed picture and nice reflection of the trees in the water.
Best regards, Paul

Leonor,

Hi Leonor,
An almost idyllic scene. The two lonely people and their reflections, the beautiful blue tones, the strange form of the tree and the boats on the beats: all strong elements in the composition.

I remember this beautiful spot of Papeete where the beach sand is black. Just to complement your posting I am adding to WS a general view of the place where the Venus Point monument is also visible.

Hello Leonor,
A good perspective on the little spit of land with its solitary tree, which makes an interesting contrast with the predominant blue tones. Pleasing colours and reflections and very good sharpness.

Hello Leonor,
What vibrant blues and greens, with a dramatic highlight in red. There is sense of tranquility here. I have not seen the South Sea Islands, but having retired from four decades of university teaching, I want very much to sail to Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora. I hope to give talks on a cruise that will take us there. In January, we are sailing from Miami to Rio de Janeiro, something that would not have been possible in the past.
Warm regards,

If it wasn't for Captain Cook, we might be speaking French in Australia. La Perouse arrived in Botany Bay just 2 weeks later. Similar stories of near French colonies in Tasmania, & Western Australia. Again, French explorers arrived just days after the Union Jack had been hoisted. It could have so easily been the Tri-colour. At least the cuisine in Australia would have improved out of sight! Oh, the photo. Nice reflections with good sharpness. The black volcanic sand is unusual. Tfs!

Thank you so much, both for the dedication and for putting this image in the Captain Cook theme. The WSs are also a great addition to piecing the jigsaw of Cook's life together on TE.
This is a stunning image with fantastic reflections. The spit of black sand points its way into the frame and is most unusual for its black colour.
I am two days late to this post, but better late than never! :D
