Photographer’s Note

People taking advantage of the September sunshine to have an open air Sunday lunch on Place Saint Pierre in the heart of Old Bordeaux.

Some information about the Saint Pierre district of Bordeaux from the Bordeaux Tourist Office web site:

It is no coincidence that the Church of Saint Pierre is in the heart of Old Bordeaux, on the very site of the original Gallo-Roman port. Bordeaux, a port before being a city, paid tribute to the patron saint port of those that lived from the river, who were the majority of the city's population.

In 1832, beneath the Place Saint-Pierre, a magnificent bronze statue of Hercules was discovered, that at the time must have decorated the entrance to the port, at that time situated at the mouth of an tributary river, the Devèze. This fine Hellenistic style sculpture is one of the most beautiful pieces in the Museum of Aquitaine. Thus did St. Pierre usurp Hercules.

In the XIIth century, the old port was filled in and most of the quarter built. The quays were moved to the South, to the mouth of another tributary, the Peugue, at the foot of the Palais de l’Ombrière.

In the XVIIIth century, The Intendants Boucher and Tourny made major changes. They opened up the quarter by demolishing the mediaeval wall, designed the Place de la Bourse et la rue Royale (rue Fernand Philipart) opened up the place du Marché Royal (place du Parlement), leaving a quarter full of Louis XV residences, decorated with mascarons, sculptures, stone balconies and wrought iron: the finest of French architecture.

Public monuments also pay tribute to the city's principal activity, be it the Monument des Girondins, The fontaine Art Nouveau on the place Amédée Larrieu, the monuments to Gaston Lafargue, local writer, or to Alexis Millardet, scientist, in the jardin public.

There´s no a special subject or focal point from where to reference and guide the picture but what can be perceived , the mood , cool atmosphere and light makes already the shot !

nice capture. The open air lunch scene is fantastic. Light is nicely managed in such tough light condition. So much lively perspective. The trees create great contrast with the square. Very well done.

Hi Stephen, such an enticing title for an enticing photo. First it's Cavorting then it's Eating. The French really do have their priorities right! :) You;ve overcome the difficulty of the shadiness of the tree versus strong sunlight and I like the positioning of the diners to the left of the frame. It's a very dynamic and very Gallic photo, TFS and enjoy your weekend, Lisa.

Tes photos de vie quotidienne bordelaise sont un délice. J'aime ton cadrage, qui laisse apercevoir cette magnifique église que je n'ai pu photographier pour cause de mauvais temps. J'espère avoir l'occasion au mois de janvier prochain de faire d'autres photos de Bordeaux. félicitations.

A pleasant picture of summer, where people drink coffee on the sidewalk and talk happily. The square is beautiful and invites us to a walk. Excellent capture, great colors and light.

Les beaux jours de septembre ont permis de profiter pleinement des promenades, des visites et sorties en tous genres. Ici, l'on remarque une ambiance bien agréable sur ce parvis où les voitures n'ont pas droit de cité ! Bel environnement du vieux Bordeaux. Très intéressante image. Amitiés.
