Photographer’s Note

The parish church of Saint John the Baptist in the picturesque village of Varaignes. Sorry for the car, but on the morning we visited there was a craft fare being held and the village was very busy with lots of cars parked all over the place. This one would have been rather difficult to clone out because of the window.

Varaignes is a French commune in the départment of Dordogne in the Aquitaine region. It is located 16 kilometres north-west of the town of Nontron in the Périgord Limousin natural regional park.

It has a 16th century château, which houses a museum of local arts and crafts with an emphasis on weaving. The church of Saint-Jean Baptiste dates from the 12th century with alterations and additions made in the 13th, 15th and 19th centuries. The village is also a centre of turkey production with an annual procession and Turkey Fair held on the 11th of November each year.
