LE MANOIR ABANDONNE DE GUSTAVE ZEDE.

This is where GUSTAVE ZEDE (1825-1891) spent all his summers. He was the marine engineer who co-invented the GYMNOTE with Dupuy-de-Lôme, in 1888. The GYMNOTE is the French first submarine and the ancestor of all modern submarines.
Nowadays, the mansion has gone to sleep, as his descendants preferred to live in more modern dwellings.
In the photo, under the vegetation, you can actually see 2 manor-houses :
The one to the right of the chimney dates back to the 18th century, and is now completely covered in ivy. Everything has collapsed inside. (See WS1)
The one to the left of the chimney dates back to the 19th century, and was inhabited by Gustave Zédé’s descendants right until the end of the 20th century. In the 1980’s, the lady of the house used to lend us costumes of the “Belle Epoque” for historical events :-)

Another GYMNOTE was buit in 1964 and decommissioned in 1986.
They also launched a submarine in 1893, called "GUSTAVE ZEDE", in commemoration of the inventor.
The 2nd submarine"G Zédé" was in activity from 1915 to 1937.
The 3rd "Gustave Zédé" was in activity from 1948 to 1971.
The 4th "Gustave Zédé" from 1978 to to 1985.

So the man was really famous in the navy although most common people don't know about him. So it's a pity to see the place abandoned now, although the grass, in what used to be the park, is cut now and again.

WS6 : A portrait of Gustave Zédé

WS4 : Grand Hall
WS3 : First communion
WS2 : Exploring
