Photographer's Note

NESTLED in its own valley of the Châtillonnais region of Burgundy, the Cistercian abbey of Fontenay was founded by St. Bernard of Clairvaux in 1118.

The architecture of Fontenay is one of the best preserved examples of the austere and powerful Cistercian style and embraced Bernard's call for simplicity, abstraction and purity of line. At the beginning of the 20th century, a family of bankers from Lyon, bought the site and began the restoration of Fontenay. Damaged parts were scrupulously restored and after many years of hard work, the abbey of Fontenay regained its Cistercian identity which led it to be listed as Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 1981. Large version viewable.
