The Lavenders Lavandula are a genus of about 25-30 species of flowering plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region south to tropical Africa and to the southeast regions of India. The genus includes annuals, herbaceous plants, subshrubs, and small shrubs. The native range extends across the Canary Islands, North and East Africa, south Europe and the Mediterranean, Arabia, and India. Because the cultivated forms are planted in gardens world-wide, they are occasionally found growing wild, as garden escapees, well beyond their natural range.

The most common species in cultivation is the Common Lavender Lavandula angustifolia (formerly L. officinalis). A wide range of cultivars can be found. Other commonly grown ornamental species are L. stoechas, L. dentata, and L. multifida.

Lavenders are widely grown in gardens. Flower spikes are used for dried flower arrangements. The fragrant, pale purple flowers and flower buds are used in potpourris. Dried and sealed in pouches, they are placed among stored items of clothing to give a fresh fragrance and as a deterrent to moths. The plant is also grown commercially for extraction of lavender oil from the flowers. This oil is used as an antiseptic and for aromatherapy.

Lavender flowers yield abundant nectar which yields a high quality honey for beekeepers. Lavender monofloral honey is produced primarily in the nations around the Mediterranean, and marketed worldwide as a premium product. Lavender flowers can be candied and are used as cake decoration. Lavender is also used as a herb, either alone or as an ingredient of herbes de Provence. Lavender is also used to flavour sugar, the product being called "lavender sugar", and the flowers are occasionally sold in a blend with black, green, or herbal tea, adding a fresh, relaxing scent and flavour.

French chefs in and around Provence, France have been incorporating this herb into their cuisine for many centuries. Lavender lends a floral, slightly sweet and elegant flavour to most dishes. For most cooking applications it is the dried buds (also referred to as flowers) of lavender that are utilised, though some chefs experiment with the leaves as well. It is the buds however that contain the essential oil of lavender, which is where both the scent and flavour of lavender are best derived.

I like this shot...the pleasant contrast between the lavander violet and the clear blue sky.
I visited this place as well 5 years ago...a region full of charme and pleasant atmosphere

I see you're back from a region where I have some roots, hope you have enjoyed a nice holidaay there :-)
This is a typical summer image here with th elow pov giving more importnce to the lavender fields and ensuring their color dominates the image, the lonely tree rising in the distance and the clouds in the sky are other nice details, pity we can't enjoy the smell on TE !

Vanessa, this shot is really pleasant. I like the POV "down below" between the Lavanda plants with the violet horizon filled by the tree. The sky is also the perfect "frame" for this shot. Compliments, Ciao, Marco.

l'image est ici vraiment magnifique. Les couleurs si typiques des champs de lavande, tellement bien restitué qu'on en sent presque le parfum.
En plus du cadrage qui donne une belle part à un ciel bien bleu ety un arbre solitaire à l'horizon qui accroche le regard.
Excellent travail rempli de senteurs méridionales.

Cette photo est magnifique. Tu as choisi un bon POV pour mettre en valeur ce champ de lavande. Le ciel si bleu s'oppose au violet de la lavande.

- Je vois que nous avons fréquenté un peu les même endroits, tu as eu plus de chance que moi, c'était une peu tôt en juin pour la floraison et j'ai eu du mal surtout que la propriétaire du champ me guettait pour ne pas que je rentre ! En tout cas ton cadrage est superbe, on en a plein la vue, bravo, c'est très réussi !

Toute la Provence dans un seule image, Vanessa. la densité des couleurs est excellente. Il ne manque que l'odeur... Mais dans certains cas, ce serait désagréable....
