Photographer’s Note

Flowing over a length of 1020km, the Loire is the longest river in France and drains an area of over one fifth of the size of the country. It is however the central stretch of the river which is the most famous, often referred to as the Valley of the Kings.

In the heart of this valley lies the lovely town of Saumur, where I have just enjoyed a wonderful week. After two rather wet and very grey days, the sun finally appeared and the area took on a whole new feel. On this evening the light seemed to have a special quality, and despite feeling rather hot and tired after a long cycle ride, I could not resist making a detour over the bridge and along the river to photograph this view, before heading off back to the campsite.

The town is dominated by the chateau which was built in the 14th century for the Dukes of Anjou and which became the residence of the governors of the town, and then later a prison and an arsenal.
