Les Invalides comprises the largest single collection/complex of monuments in Paris, including:
• Musée de l'Armée
• Musée des Plans-Reliefs
• Musée de l'Ordre de la Libération
• L'Eglise de St-Louis-des-Invalides

In 1670, Louis XIV - the Sun King - founded Les Invalides near what was then called the Grenelle Plain. An old soldiers home, it was funded by a five year levy on the salaries of soldiers currently serving in the army at that time. The first stones were laid in 1671, for what was to become a complex providing quarters for 4,000. Construction followed plans drawn up by Libéral Bruant, and was completed in 1676. The Esplandade was layed out by Robert de Cotte.

Construction of the dome began in 1706. Designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and completed by de Cotte after Mansart died in 1708.

Many of the arms used by the mob when it attacked the Bastille on 14 July 1789 were taken from Les Invalide on the morning of that day. Despite resistence by the posted sentries, they were overwhelmed by the mob which finally entered the underground rifle storehouse. Roughly 28,000 arms were taken.

The most significant event in the history of Les Invalides however, is unquestionably the return of the body of Napoléon in 1840. After seven years of negotiation with the British government, Louis-Philippe, King of France, obtained permission to repatriate the Emperor's remains from St. Helena. On 8 October 1840 - 19 years after the death of the Emperor - the coffin was exhumed and opened for two minutes before transport to France aboard the frigate La Belle Poule. Those present claim that the body remained in a state of perfect preservation.
After arriving at Le Havre, it was brought up the Seine and landed at Paris at Courbevoie. On 15 December 1840 a state funeral was held, and despite a winter snowstorm, the hearse proceeded from the Arc de Triomphe down the Champs-Elysées, across the Place de la Concorde to the Esplanade and finally to the cupola in St Jerome's Chapel until the tomb - designed by Visconti - was completed. On 3 April 1861 Napoléon I came to his final rest in the crypt under de dome.

Hello George

The play between shades and light is really well managed and gives an interesting effect.
The modern buildings in the background are in the shade while the marvelous dome takes its fullness in the great golden light.
The shadow of the Eiffel Tower adds a special mood to your image.
Very well done.

Regards
Karine

Hi George,
The shadow works surprisingly well as an extra feature. The warm sunset tone is really beautiful and is emphasized by the background in shadow.

Hello George,
A very good cityscape with this beautiful building the centre of attraction. The lighting is excellent resulting in some interesting light and shadow contrasts and producing a sparkle in the golden dome. Superb clarity.

Hello George!
That's a very eye-catching and wonderful picture!
The vertical format was the best choice!
Colors, sharpness and management of light are all excellent!
The composition with the shadow of the Eiffel Tower has created such a beautiful image, with the contrasting golden dome of the "Invalides" shining with the last sun rays of the day!
TFS - Congratulations!

Excellent lighting, wow! And I love the shadow of the tower! A beautiful golden color! TFS and have a great day!

Wonderful shot, George!
That is a real coup to get the Eiffel Tower shadow across the picture like that. And the light in this photo is superb. I like the fact that you have left the light and colour a bit subdued; it looks very natural. The steep vertical format allows us to appreciate the many rows of windows and roofs, and the sunlit spire is so well placed in the top right corner. Really a marvellous picture. Well done.

Andrew

Hi George,
Such a great play of light and shadow you captured with this view over the roofs of Paris. I really like the contrast between the warm light of the sunset and the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. The shadow in the background makes the Dome des Invalides stand out wonderfully with its golden colour. Really beautiful photo from Paris, thanks a lot for sharing!

George
Un cliché original avec cette ombre de la tour Eiffel qui semble vouloir envahir Paris mais qui semble se détourner devant le toit d'or des Invalides. Très bien vu!
Amicalement

Hello Georges
Hehe! its reminds me something ;)I was there in July for the 1st time in my life! The Tower shade takes an important place in the picture and contrasts well with 'Les Invalides' at sunset time!
Cheers

Ciao George, splendid shadow of Eiffel tower in the fantastic sunset light, great composition, very well done, ciao Silvio

George, what a great idea, there are so many so-so pictures around this area that this is really refreshing. Great color and detail in the shot, especially on the fantastically lit Les Invalides. Great capture.

Hi George, there's a lovely play of shadow and light in this photo. I particularly like the glint on the church steeple. It's also refreshing to see a view from the Eiffel Tower, rather than another one of it. Good work!

Dear George
A very known sight, a well known spec, yet it's the marvellous light you capture, making the dome of the Invalides glitter, which makes this picture. Not only that, we have the long unmistakable shadow of the Eiffel looming across the frame. A very different & a superb capture from Paris!
Best Regards
Angshu

Hi George, I have just been to Paris & although I never managed to get up this famous tower I can see through your wonderful shot what I missed, the superb golden dome of the military museum really stands-out in this wonderfully sharp picture, if my wife had not been scared of heights then I would have laid my eyes on this beautiful sight. TFS, kind regards Wilson.

Excellent take and almost metaphoric. The Eiffel tower puts everything into shadow for the first timer... fortunately there are lots of other things (more interesting) to see...
