[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
Puymirol is a small village in the department of Lot-et-Garonne and the Aquitaine region. Its inhabitants, of which there about 900, are called Puymirolais.

Sitting on a steep plateau 153 meters above sea level, the village of Puymirol is a former bastide created by Raymond VII, Count of Toulouse, on land ceded by Pierre de Reims, bishop of Agen. The date given as the founding of this place once deemed impregnable is 1246.

However, there was already a centre of population close by with a castle and a church dedicated to Saint Seurin. This original village, which was called Saint-Seurin-de-Grand-Castel, was known for its fairs and is mentioned in records dating back to the year 1100.

A new church, built at the same time as the bastide was erected under the name of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption. Gradually, the name of Puymirol, which was given to the bastide became current and that of Saint-Seurin-de-Grand-Castel was lost.

In 1286, Edward I, King of England, granted new privileges to the inhabitants of Puymirol. These privileges were considerable because, during the alternating occupations of the town by the English and French forces, each party maintained the favours and concessions formerly granted to ensure the cooperation and obedience of the inhabitants of a place that was regarded as strategically important.

All cities of the Agenais were besieged, and repeatedly taken many times between the Albigensian wars and those of the Fronde. However, Puymirol endured fewer attacks than most others, probably because it seemed impregnable. It was besieged unsuccessfully by French troops in 1324, when it was defended by one of the finest English commanders of the time, Amanieu de Fossat, Lord of Madaillan.

During the wars of the sixteenth century, Puymirol, attacked by Protestants in November 1569, was again successfully defended by Francis de Montpezat. But in 1574, Protestants managed to occupy the town, perhaps as a result of a betrayal, and held on to it until the advent of Henri IV. Henry whilst warring in the Guyenne, made the town of Puymirol, for which he seemed to have a particular liking, a place of safety.

Puymirol is a perfect example of a medieval fortified town. The walls, which follow the contour of the plateau had a length of 790 metres and a width varying between 90 and 250 metres. Four gates of unequal dimensions pierced the walls at various points. The town has several streets that run lengthwise and which are crossed by others together with la place des Cornières, which is located in the centre of town. Three wells regularly placed along the main central street served the needs of the population.

Bonjour Stephen

Cordialement
Joël

Hello Stephen,
typical French architecture and very nice presented with the blue sky and the leaves at the side. It looks calm and peaceful even with the cars there.

Hi Stephen

The light red facade of the building contrasts well against the deep blue sky. Good sharpness & composition. Tfs!

Stephen,
This is a nice place, too bad the cars had to be there! Your composition is fine using a nice angle to create depth and direction. The overhanging tree provides nice framing for the shot. The lighting and colors are fine with nice sharpness and detail.
TFS,
Asa

Bonsoir Stephen,
Magnifique immeuble avec ces beaux arcs. Les voitures sont toujours là où ils devraient pas ...
Excellent lumière et de très bonnes informations.

Hi Stephen,
This photo is certainly good enough, but the note is even better. Your notes are always very interesting and a very fine source for inspiration when planning trips to France.
Greetings from Gothenburg
Gunnar

Hello Stephen,

Your nicely angled shot gives the viewer the opportunity to appreciate the architectural design of adjoining sides of the building. The details and colours are well recorded.
I like how the addition of the leaves in the f/g softens the mainly angular 'feel' of the photograph.
A very nicely presented shot.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Stephen
La ville est sous le soleil et seule ces arcades peuvent offrir de l'ombre!!
Belle réalisation sur cette ancienne place; Une belle lumière et beaucoup de détails.
Amicalement
Hervé

Wonderful shot. That's really an impressive building and I love the blue sky so much. Well done.
Best wishes,
Achim

Bonjour
