[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
Here, I was travelling on a boat down the St-Martin Canal. We were half way through one of the four sets of double locks on our way down to the Arsenal Marina, just by the Place de la Bastille. I noticed on the bridge a couple making a movie. Could they have been filming our cruising boat? Students of Film, perhaps. Or people making a promotional video. In any case, an extreme enlargement of the shot showed that it was a large video camera, of a type used for commercial rather than private purposes. For non-native English speakers, we say that the making of a film is called a 'shoot'. A still photographic session can also be called a 'shoot'.

One can clearly see here the difference in the water levels between the two stages of the lock. I've cropped the photo and converted to b/w in Photoshop.

Many visitors to Paris will take a cruise on the Seine; may I suggest to you that a cruise on the St-Martin canal is equally interesting and a little more relaxed.

Hello Andrew,
A good composition with interesting graphical lines. It really suits the black and white treatment, which helps make for a particular mood. An excellent conversion with a good range of tones and very good clarity.

Hi Andrew

Good horizontal layering, in this superb b&w image, with good sharpness, tonal range & pov. Tfs!

Hi Andrew,
Wonderful detail you've captured throughout the entire scene, you've even managed to include a dog. Every element is so sharp and well defined.
The B/W treatment certainly adds to the cinematic genre you mention in your note.
Composition and POV afford an interesting and charming insight into the St-Martin Canal.
Lovely work.
Regards
Peter

Hi Andrew
I like the effect the lines have in this photo and of course the b/w.
Cheers, Vicky

Hola Andrew , excelente disparo en b&w quiza le falte algo de contraste pero me gusta .
Recibe un saludo.Luis

Hello Andrew. Black-and-white? No pole filter? How it seems, you go on new ways. The photo pleases me very well. Light, shade, grey values etc. are in the best way. Often black-and-white pictures work better than colored. Actually one should manufacture a black-and-white version from a photo always. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Great place (one of my favorites) and nice photo - great POV and a chance that the dog was passing by !
Nice light and great B&W,
Best,
Cath.

Hi Andrew. Nice shot of the shoot! The b&w works well. Love the dog crossing the bridge. Chris

Hello Andrew,

What an interesting concept - you photographing them, photographing you!
There is a lot of strong horizontal, diagonal and vertical lines which accentuate clearly how well you have composed this shot. I think your use of b&w makes them even more noticeable.
The young couple add interest and scale and what a contrast their enthusiasm makes with the slow, disinterested attitude of the dog-walker.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
Many thanks for your warm comments on 'The finishing touch'.

HI Andrew,m

"Clean" B&W shot with excellent light management here.
The composition is balanced and the image is
sharp.
Very pleasing photo.
Rgs,
Maryori :)

Hello Andrew
Very strong black and white here with excellent tonal images throughout. Compositon is spot on and I like the graduated sky which blends in well. I l also like the couple on the bridge who are also out taking captures. Very well done

Jim

Andrew as with many of your posted photos and including this one you show excellent timing in your captures. I love the layers of bridge handrails and the human element up above. Good work!

Hello Andrew
Une très belle netteté sur cette photo qui nous permet de profiter de beaucoup de détails. Le canal St Martin en arrière plan avec sa perspective donne une très belle profondeur à cette photo.
très bien vu!!

Hello Andrew:

I love the treatment-toned B & W that he has given to this scene.

The composition is significant, according to the title. The frame is perfect, and the lighting is dynamic and very set.

John

Good morning, Andrew.
A fine conversion, featuring a most interesting array of graphical lines, great detail and overall definition. And... I love the horizontal layering on which the shot is built. Great job!
Have a wonderful day, I'll be seeing you.

Hi Andrew,
L'image est une belle prise au fil de l'eau. Pourquoi une conversion en N&B? Le ciel semble parfaitement exposé.
Amitiés
Marc

Hello Andrew,
I looked at all your pictures and did not know witch one to comment on first, but seeing that I’m a sucker for black- and-white pictures. All I can really say is that it is fantastic, and it reminds me of those olden-day photography, thank you

Hello Andrew,
A nice composition and an interesting note, thank you for the advice ;-)
I like your B&W treatment, it gives strength to the shot.
Well done.

Hello Andrew,

I am not fan of black and white, perhaps lived I to long in black and white period.
But your composition and presentation find I your picture absolutely not bad, nice perspective and lovely through look under the bridge, nice trip story about the movie team.
Very well done, TFS.

Have a nice sunday,
John.

You have a good sense of the observation and reflexes fast to exploit a situation. Good explanation on the circumstances of your shoot and their shoot. Excellent conversion into black and white. Beautiful and good work

Hi Andrew, friend,

by happy circumstances I was on the same place. Paris is my favorite. My wife has a dream about Sidney. Here your position is interesting. The black end white is one of the good ideas. Many thanks for your presence.

Nice symmetry to the shot and works well in black and white. Not too keen on the subject matter but that is just down to personal taste. Thanks for sharing and thank you for your honest comments.

Dean.

Hi Andrew,
What I like the most is the combination of the superb graphical effects of the bridge and two lovely model at the center.
Congrats and have a nice day,
Zeynep

Bonjour Andrew
Vous ne publiez pas souvent en N&B et ici l'image a du caractère avec ces deux personnes sur le pont dans le dégradé bien géré du ciel avec un bon rendu du contraste.
Bonne journée

Hello Andrew
A good natural shot of the couple in the midst of shooting action. The horizontal elements works well here. The B&W works well here, but I was wondering why you converted from colour & saw your thread with Marc. A good documentary like shot. Well done
Regards
Angshu

Funny that you taook hthe photgrapher. But I will stay with the view of the lock, which is great, and the choice of B&W is a good one, a reminder of the B&W of the old Paris taken by so many famous photographers.

All the best,

Emmanuel

Hi Andrew. This is a very busy photo with lots going on and as such holds the attention for longer than a lot of others. The videographers, the gentleman and his dog, the lock, the scene beyond all add up nicely. I like the BW conversion, adds a timelessness to the scene also. Great photo and thanks for sharing.
Have a good weekend, Paul.
