The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption in Puymirol.

Puymirol is a small village in the department of Lot-et-Garonne and the Aquitaine region. Its inhabitants, of which there about 900, are called Puymirolais.

Sitting on a steep plateau 153 meters above sea level, the village of Puymirol is a former bastide created by Raymond VII, Count of Toulouse, on land ceded by Pierre de Reims, bishop of Agen.

In the sixteenth century, the church of Saint-Seurin, which was located outside the walls of the town, and the town church of Notre-Dame were destroyed by Protestants, who used the materials to strengthen the fortifications. The church of Saint-Seurin has never been found. In the case of Notre-Dame, only the beautiful porch, which can be seen here, and the tower were spared.

The current church, which was rebuilt in the seventeenth century under the direction of the architect La Barberette, is a veritable necropolis. Under its coated tiles are interred a great number of the former bourgeoisie and notables of the town. During the period 1701 to 1781, there were created nearly four hundred graves. Broadly speaking, the graves are lined up along the walls and between the stone path that runs parallel to the long axis of the nave. Affirming the right to a bench or pew bought the right to burial under the same bench. In principle, the faithful invested with a particular function or position in the town were buried under the bench reserved for their position. Thus, there were separate benches for judges, town councillors, priests and vicars to the sacristy, regents, notaries, and so on.

The above information is courtesy of the French Wikipedea site. Any errors in interpretation and translation are down to me.

When I visited the bell tower was undergoing major restoration work and covered in scaffolding and plastic sheeting, so I decided to exclude most it from the photograph. Hope you will understand.

Hallo Stephen!
A very informative note - completed by an informative photo. You took it in spite of the restoration works - and you were right to take it! Ancient buildings so often partly are hidden behind scaffolds. In spite of this your picture gives a good impression of the building and especially of its interesting and confidence inspiring walls.
Greetings from still summerly Germany!
Frank

Bonjour Stephen
Une nouvelle église bien cadrée, bien lumineuse sous un beau ciel bleu. Ta galerie est riche en édifices religieux qui constituent le partrimoine français.
Merci pour le partage et bonne journée.

The entrance is very pretty!! Interesting architecture once again. Extremely good lighting and detail . TFS and have a great day!

Hi Stephen.
Your note, as usual, is extremely interesting. Your gallery is a kind of history holiday in the southerly regions of France. This one is a sharp and well composed shot which allows us to see the old entrance porch and gives enough of a view of the tower to show the scale and enhance the perspective.
Regards,
Andrew

Hi Stephen

A good choice of a vertical format with excellent colour, lighting & contrast. Good textures in the stone facade of the church. Merci pour ce partage!

Bonjour Stephen,
Voilà une image réalisée sans tricherie, une vue comme telle, dans son contexte, avec échafaudages et voitures. On découvre parmi ces motifs parasites, une belle architecture. Belle réalisation.
Bonne journée
Amicalement
Joël
