Tour St-Jacques (on the right side)

Located in Paris’ IVe arrondissement, Tour St-Jacques was once part of a church known as Saint-Jacques-la-Boucherie (literally, Saint James the Butcher). It was the patron church of butchers and was frequented by the wealthy wholesale butchers that sold their goods at the nearby Les Halles market. Pilgrims used the church to meet before embarking on their long journeys.

The church was built between 1509 and 1523 and was named for St. James the Great. (A statue of the saint was placed atop the tower in the 19th century.) In 1797, during the French Revolution, the church was demolished, leaving only the tower, which is now considered a national historic landmark.

In the mid-1800s, the tower, late Gothic in style, was restored by the architect Théodore Ballu. At that time, it was raised onto a pedestal and a small park was built around it. Putting the tower on a pedestal allowed it to retain its original height despite the absence of the remainder of the church.

The tower was designed in the Flamboyant Gothic style and, indeed, it is quite ornate, full of spikes, turrets, and plenty of niches that hold a variety of statuary. The tower stands 52 meters high (about 171 feet).

Pascal’s Lab

In the mid 17th century, mathematician and physicist Blaise Pascal chose to use Tour St-Jacques as his laboratory, where he conducted a variety of experiments on atmospheric pressure.

In tribute to Pascal, a statue of the scientist stands at the base of the tower and a number of meteorological instruments were placed on the roof.

Montmartre (in the background)

Above all, Montmartre is known for its many artists who have been omnipresent since 1880. The name Montmartre, an area around a hill in the 18th arrondissement, north of downtown Paris, is said to be derived from either Mount of Martyrs or from Mount of Mars. Until 1873, when the Sacré-Coeur was built on top of the hill, Montmartre was a small village, inhabited by a mostly farming community.

The Basilica Project

The project to build the Sacré-Coeur Basilica (Basilica of the Sacred Heart) was initiated by a group of influential people. Their reasons to build this monument was two-fold: they had pledged to build a church if Paris escaped unscathed from the war with the Prussians and they saw the defeat of the French at the hands of the Prussian army in 1870 as a moral condemnation of the sins of Paris. The project was authorized by the National Assembly in 1873, and a competition was organized. The goal was to build an imposing basilica true to Christian traditions.

The winner of the competition was Paul Abadie, who had already restored two cathedrals in France. He built an immense basilica in a Roman-Byzantyne style. Its large dome towers 83m (272ft) over the top of the Montmartre hill.

Bonjour George
Un Point de vue qui en donne vraiment bien sur les toits de Paris avec le Sacré coeur et la tour Saint-Jacques bien cadrés en diagonale.
Bonne journée

Hello George! Excellent cityscape. Amazing rooftops. Good sharpness, very good focus. Original picture. Good luck!

Hello George,
Superb image with much of depth and details. The pollution of Paris gives varied and curious colours to the sky. An excellent work.

Hallo George!
I think it's an uncommon view of Paris - but a very interesting one, with a plethora of details! this steeple towering the city creates a wonderful addition to the scenery.
I like the light in this picture very much - and of course your note!

hello George,
splendid this panoramic shot of Montmartre and Basilica from Notre-Dame.I like the sharpness and the clarity of the dense houses and the great depth of the scene.Well done.

Have a nice afternoon,Danos

Impressive scenery,Love your position of main element in this frame with beautiful in contrast and depth,Highly sharpness provide the detail to explore and good clarity of color too.Outstanding work,TFS.

George, AWESOME, what a refreshing scene from the city of light. Sacre-Coeur looks a bit elongated in this view I think but I am sure it is the optical illusion of the dome and steeple alignment. Colors are great and detail is super but mostly it is this angle you have chosen that makes it great.

Greg

Bonjour George
This summer, I've been many times close by the tour ST Jacques, because of a friend who leaves near by, but did not go to Notre-Dame. A good vantage point for this wide view over Paris in a nice light/shade contrast. The cloud on top of the Sacré-coeur is a nice detail to look.
Cheers
Marilyn

Hi George,
You were lucky because the tour St Jacques was not visible since many years, and it is only a few months since it is now opened )it was completely covered) Nice POV from Notre Dame! You also had nice light and clear air, to have much detail and crisp texture. Well balanced framing of the cityscape!
Yes the dome has a strange shape from here!
Greetings
Laurent
