La Danse [Dance]

In 1863, Charles Garnier, the architect of the new Paris Opera, commissioned four sculpted groups by four artists who had won the Grand Prix de Rome to decorate the facade of the building. Carpeaux was to cover the theme of dance. Over a three-year period, he produced a variety of sketches and models before conceiving this turning farandole of women encircling the spirit of dance. The sculptor's main concern was to convey the feeling of movement, and this he achieved through a dual momentum of circular and vertical motion. The leaping spirit dominates the group, urging on the circle of bacchantes, in unbalanced postures. The public was shocked by the realism of the female nudes, which they judged unseemly; indeed, a bottle of ink was thrown against the sculpture and its removal was requested. However, the war of 1870, followed by the death of Carpeaux, put an end to the controversy.

Opéra de Paris Garnier

The opulent Opéra de Paris Garnier was designed by Charles Garnier for Emperor Napoleon III. It is the most important symbol of the 19th century Second Empire baroque style.

Construction

Construction of the opera building started in 1862, but it wasn't completed until 1875, partly because an underground lake was discovered during construction. The small lake still exists under the opera building. It was the hiding place of the 'Phantom of the Opera' in Paul Leroux's famous play.

Palais Garnier

Since the construction of the modern Opéra de Paris Bastille in 1989, the majestic Opéra Garnier is now mainly used for ballet performances. It was also officially renamed 'Palais Opera'.
Even though the opera has a seating capacity of less than 2,200, the building is one of the largest theatres in the world by acreage. It is 172 meter long, 125 meter wide and reaches a height of 73,6 meter (564 x 410 x 241 ft). The facade is decorated with rose marble columns, friezes, sculpture groups and two large gilded statues.

Bonjour Georg
J'ai cru que tu étais parti faire un tour en Italie. C'est un joli cliché, difficile à cadrer, mais tu t'en sors bien.
Je te souhaite un bon dimanche.
Nicole

Hi Georg,
Another nice one from Paris,in a classic way I think,
I like the choice for a low-moderate saturation and some nice
tones,it looks very elegant this way.An interesting perspective
with both the architectural details and the building,I don't
like very much the sky here, quite a wear color for a sky I think,
maybe I'm wrong.
Well done and have a nice sunday,
HOratiu
