Until the reunification in 1990 Germany was divied in two parts - the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Deomcratic Republic with its socialistic Constitution, evolved from the Soviet zone of occupation after Wold War II. Its political system was based on the dictatorship of the Socialist Unity Party. The capital of the German Democratic Republik was Eastern Berlin and its Parliament, the Volkskammer met in the so called Palace of the Republic (Palast der Republik) which also housed art galleries and restaurants.

The Palast was constructed from 1973 to 1976 in the prevailing architectural style for East German buildings, using bronze mirrored windows. You can see it here.

After the reunification the palace was closed because of its asbestos contamination. This asbestos was disposed between 1998 and 2003. Matter of expense: 35 million €.
In 2003 the Bundestag decided the demolition of the former parliament building. Two German political parties for years tried to avoid the demolition but in 2005 it was decided finally and the deconstruction began in 2006 by help of five cranes.

In my picture you can see the site some weeks ago. For me it's a symbol of the downfall of communism ...

Only some meters away in a park there is a monument of two men: Marx and Engels, the authors of the "Communist Manifesto", one of the world's most influential political manuscripts.
You can see the monument in the workshop. They are sitting there - turning their back on the deconstruction site ;-)

Hello Frank!

Oh, Palace of DDR is demolished....It's so symbolic.
I have seen this building several times in TV news (especially in 1989!) and some German films such as "Goodbye Lenin".

Well, communism seems to die in Europe completely.....unlike in Far East where China and North Korea (my two neighbors) still be controlled by communist parties.

I thought the Palace might be preserved as a witness of history. But the destiny of the palace should be decided by the will of the re-unified German people.

By the way, is it true that the Kaiser's Palace is going to be rebuilt?

Hi,
Interesting note of this ruin. I was there a couple of months ago and wondered what it had been before.
The WS is also an interesting metaphor.
I also feel a little sorry for the demolition. All buildings are monuments over their era, weather it was good or bad.
Take care
M
