And now a different approach of architectural photography. In contrast to my former posting (Liebfrauenkirche) here is everything (e.g. large space, fitting surrounding) optimal for a pretty photo of this genre - OK, except the photographer.

As for the church: Dedicated to St. Nikolai (Nicholas) patron saint of boatmen. The church was built in 1290 to replace the court chapel in the Saalhof. Extensive renovations in the mid 1400s gave the church its present high tower and steep roof. During the late middle ages, a trumpeter was stationed in the tower and greeted arriving boats with a blast of his horn. The gallery with balustrade and projecting platforms was used by dignitaries as a viewing point for the tournaments, plays and imperial coronations that took place in the Roemerberg below. /altfrankfurt.com/
Since 1840 the church has been part of the "dotation system" that means that Nikolaikirche is one of the eight churches in property of the city of Frankfurt. According to an agreement of 1830 the city took over the rights and obligations over these eight churches and the parishes are granted their use only. (A similar system to that of France but with two significant differences:
1. while in France since the Revolution a general rule in Germany rather an exception,
2. the proprietor in France is the state, here the city.)
As a rare exception in the old town of Frankfurt the Nikolaikirche had not been destroyed in the World War II. The last renovation lasted from 1989 till 1992.

By clicking on the map function (an then several times on "+") you can have a view of the church and its environment from a satellite.

Good morning Laszlo,
nice presentation of the Church of St. Nikolai of Frankfurt am Main.I like the architectural line of the church as the people that passing bye in front of it.I would like to see more saturated colors because of the hard lighting conditions.

Have a nice day,danos

Complimenti.
Ciao
Paolo.
