Here I show you the church St. Michael in Hildesheim, a city in the federal state Niedersachsen, not far away from Hannover. St. Michael is a World Heritage Site of UNESCO.

St. Michael was built at the begin of the 11th century by bishop Bernward who defined the crypt as his burial place. It is built in a pre-Romanesque, the so called Ottonian style. In the 12th century all columns of the nave - excepting two of them - were replaced and in the 13th century St. Michael got its famous ceiling painting, showing the family tree of Christ. This incredible huge painting still today is preserved. You can see it here.

It is remarkable that the crypt of this church - since 1542 a Protestant one - still is consecrated Catholic! It was consecrated in 1015 by Bernward who is buried here.

Because of its outstanding situation on a hill in the city St. Michael is the landmark of Hildesheim - not the cathedral.

Beautiful caoture, the building looks so majestic framed by that tree and the lovely sky.
The POV from down the hill works well to give the sense of majesty.

The two round towers and the square tower make this place very nice. Copper roof care foe a nice colour.
Composition and presentation with the lovely sky are superb.

Ein gestochen scharfes Foto diese schönen Bauwerks,sehr schön mit dem Riesegen Baum davor.Sehr schöne kräftige Farben und toller Kontrast.Dein Standort und die Kompo gefallen mnir sehr gut,mit dem dunkelgrünen Streifen im Vordegrund und dem Blick leicht nach oben.

ein sehr schönes Bild von dieser beeindruckenden Kirche.
Du hast hier ein tolles Licht und wunderbare Farben. Auch Dein Blickwinkel ist gut gewählt und verleiht der Kirche noch mehr Grösse. Gut gefallen mir auch der grosse Baum rechts im Bild, sowie der schöne Himmel als Hintergrund.

It's a great place and amazing photo of it! Very ancient, and looks quite impressive also. As many of churches from these times, it looks a lot like a fortress.

Hallo Frank,
genau diese Periode hat mir gefehlt. Es gibt wohl kaum Spuren der Architektur zwischen den Römern und der Romanik (abgesehen von Ravenna und einigen byzantinischen Kirchen), es musste aber auch damals gebaut werden. Aber wie? Das älteste Bauwerk von Szeged ist ein achteckiger Kirchturm aus dem elften Jahrhundert. Hier sehe ich einen achteckigen Turm auch. (Und vergessen wir den Aachener Dom nicht!) Vielleicht das fehlende Kettenglied?
Interessant, allerdings.
