Photographer's Note

This is the main building of the moated castle in the little village Reelkirchen in the very north-east of the federal state North Rhine -Westphalia - not far away from Detmold. In the workshop you can see a photo of the moat and the castle's gate.
It was built in the middle of the 16th century whereas the village first was first mentioned in a deed of the year 1146. The church of Reelkirchen however was erected already in the year 850 (!)

In the year 1523 Hermann von (of) Mengersen obtained the fiefdom of the village from the bishop of Paderborn. In order to store the tithe which the peasants had to pay securely, mostly agricultural products, he built a big barn and moated it in 1550 - a man-made island. In 1566 he added a residential house. In 1617 the family Mengersen had to pledge the property to the noble family of Bruchhausen, which lived there until 1750. In 1755 the family of Mengersen was able to buy the estate back again and to build the stately home which is shown in my picture.

The castle today is surrounded by a romantic park with wonderful old trees and the moat still today has a breadth of 5 m and a water depth of 2 m.

Using the map "view" function at the left you can zoom in (please click several times at +) exactly to the castle with the surrrounding park.
