Photographer's Note
This is one of the buildings of Castle Cappenberg, situated near the town Lünen in the eastern part of Ruhr and in the very south of the region called Münsterland (please see map view). In former times it has been a Premonstratensian monastery with a truly interesting history:
The Counts of Cappenberg, who were related to the Salians and the Staufers, were a rich and powerful family. During the Investiture Controversy, when they supported Duke Lothar von Supplinburg against Emperor Heinrich V, Count Gottfried von Cappenberg and his brother Otto von Cappenberg led their armies in February 1121 under the leadership of Duke Lothar against the city of Münster. A great part of the town was destroyed, and the old cathedral was burnt down. Before the Emperor could bring them to trial for violation of the peace of the realm, Gottfried – either out of genuine repentance or out of fear of the Imperial judgment - gave the greater part of his estates in Westphalia - also castle Cappenberg - to the founder of the Premonstratensain Order, Norbert of Xanten. He renounced worldly life and withdrew into a monastery, where - according to contemporary custom - he was immune from punishment.
Against the wishes of his family he founded in his ancestral castle on the Cappenberg a Premonstratensian monastery, Cappenberg Abbey (Kloster Cappenberg). For his wife Ida and his sisters Gerberga and Beatrix, he built a nunnery next door.
After an existence of almost 700 years the monastery was dissolved in 1803 and became an estate of the Prussian Crown and from now on it was used as a castle. You can see the main building HERE.
Nowadays Cappenberg Castle is an excursion destination, with a museum. Art exhibitions and concerts are regularly held there. The ancient collegiate church still exists and it is a real architectural gem. I'll show it tomorrow.
Well, this building! It is the old water tower of Cappenberg castle, constructed in 1899, now a protected monument, which was restored in 1992. Today it serves a an outlook tower.
Unfortunately I had to include this roof-edge righthand because another point of view wasn't possible.
In workshop you can see a part of the castle's park.

Hallo Frank,
Guten morgen.

Hello Frank,
Good use of the vertical to capture this rather splendid looking water tower. I like the light and shadow contrasts and the natural colours. The bit of roof on the right is not that obtrusive and does not spoil the overall enjoyment of the image. Greetings from a wet and windy Charente-Maritime.

Hallo Frank
Un ciel bleu qui compense le mauvais temps chez moi.
Le jour où les feuilles vont apparaitre il sera plus difficile de photographier cette tour.

Hallo Frank,
A romantic and enchanting photo. A good composition in vertical format. The tree branches nicely frame the view towards the old water tower. With leaves you could see much less. :-) Beautiful natural colours and excellent sharpness. I might open up the shadows a little, but that is a matter of taste. Thanks for the excellent, informative note!
Greetings from rainy Espoo - have a nice Sunday,

Hi Frank,
An interesting tree with very twisted branches that provide a very fine and irregular pattern in front of the very strict lines of the tower behind. Also interesting to compare this image with the WS, I think I should have chosen the WS myself, but of course this is really a matter of taste.
Kind regards
Gunnar

Hello Frank,
Similarly, interesting structures disappear at high speed from the landscape of Wielkopolska. It is a pity, because the water towers can provide a beautiful and original item, not only of urban architecture. It turns out that such a picture on your tower looks very impressive. Plane trees created a natural (albeit cramped due to the height of the tower) frame for this photo. I would like to take this paved road to the left for a quiet stroll.
Have a nice day,
Jurek

Hi Frank, Is this not just a wonderful time to take photos.. clear days, sharp light and no leaves on the trees. I h have had a great month with the similar concept of yours. I feel you have got the light right and a good depth.. The tree leads your eye to the focal point, Well donbe Ricx

Hallo Frank,
Hartmut
