Photographer's Note
This is the collegiate church of the former Premonstratensian monastery Cappenberg in the eastern part of Ruhr and in the very south of the region called Münsterland (please see map view).
About the interesting history of the beginning of this monastery please read in the note to my yesterday's photo.
In the year 1122 the double monastery - for men and women - was established in the former castle of count Gottfried von Cappenberg. At this time the construction of a three nave pier basilica with a platform roof began. It was consecrated in 1149 and the relics of Gottfried were transported here and entombed in the choir. The church got its today's vaulting in 15th century in connection with other alteration works, especially concerning the choir.
The church shelters a lot of outstanding and precious religious artworks - and a guided tour there really is recommended.
Photographing this building in summer is impossible because of this wonderful old sycamore tree.
In workshop you can see the interior of this outstanding church.

Schönen Sonntag Frank,
bist Du oben in Kurlaub? Imposanter Baum vor dieser eindrucksvollen Kirche..zur jetzigen Jahreszeit ohne Grün ein gutes Motiv..
gute Erholung, Gruß Bernd

Hello Frank,
Good job the tree is not in full leaf, otherwise much of the building would be obscured :-) As it stands the architecture is well defined and the image benefits from some attractive shadow play. The detail in the brickwork is beautifully captured under a sympathetic ambient light. Drizzly and dull here today.

Hi Frank.
Stunning photo in great early Spring light.
When I saw the title I wondered if it were the tree or the church that is so old. The shadows of the tree on the stone work look wonderful. One can easily see the monastic buildings well enough through the bare branches. A fascinating photo, and very sharp. Good note as usual.
Regards,
Andrew

Hi Frank,
A beautiful church and I am certain that if you had waited some months, we would not have seen the church at all, due to all green leaves in the tree. So here you have combined the interesting architecture with the very graphical pattern of all the branches in front of it. A very pleasant combination!
Kind regards
Gunnar

Guten Morgen Frank, Marvelous shot of the church. I think the tree branches accentuate the building. It looks like the growth starting on the trees would have wiped out the picture in a few more weeks. Having house guests , so doubt if I will be posting. gotta run Have a good week. Roger

Bonjour Frank,

Good evening, Frank.
Many thanks for the dedication with which illustrates the location in which you reside. I have to admit that you're doing it with a big heart. It is unfortunate that the collegiate obscured an enormous crown of the tree. On the other hand it is fortunate that the branches of this giant does not yet have the crown of leaves. Nice staff, beautiful weather, beautiful art and wonderful composition.
Have a nice evening,
Jurek

Hallo Frank,
A really attractive photo, where the dense branches of the old tree against the blue sky gives a nice graphical impression. You are right, after some time one would not see almost anything about this church, which has an attractive architecture. Very beautiful light and excellent sharpness. TFS!
Greetings from rainy Espoo,
Lasse
