Photographer's Note

This picture was taken from the waste rock pile called "Sophienhoehe" near Jülich. It is 200 m above average ground level and the hole next to it is 200 m deep.The pit is from surface black coal mining, to my knowledge the largest pit in Western Germany.
What you see on the picture is not a digger but a similar tool which dumps the digged earth. On one side of the pit, the diggers dig the earth above the coal, put it on belts which lead arond the pit and similar vehicles dump it on the other side of the pit. This way the pit wanders continuously and follows the coal.
You can get an idea bout the size of the tool when you look ath the car to the right of the mighty wheels.
