My photo was taken three weeks ago in front of the old engine shed of my city, Siegen. It was built in 1884 and it is one of the oldest engine sheds - being in use - of the federal state Nordrhein-Westfalen (North Rhine-Westphalia). The diameter of it's semicircle is 120 meters (please look here).

Today this shed is run by a club of "friends of old locomotives" which repairs and renovates ancient locomotives - also diesel and electric locomotives. The steam-engine extra tours, organized several times a year, are very well visited events and it's always a pleasure to hear the sound of a locomotive gaining momentum or the steam whistle resounding in the valleys around Siegen.

In the middle of August the club had invited to one of it's engine shed festivals. I've been there before thousands of steam enthusiasts populated the site and the engine shed.

Some facts about the shown old ladies:
38 1772 was built in 1915 in Elbing, then west Prussia
57 3088 was built in 1922 in Düsseldorf
051 724-3 was built in 1941 in Schwerte

In the workshop you can see one of the steam engines when leaving the shed.

Using the map view function left hand you can see the engine shed - even details!

Hallo Frank,

...Oh yeah, I need steam
Feel the steam all around me
Ah you're turning up the heat
When I start to dream aloud
See you move your hands and feet
Won't you step into this cloud...
[Peter Gabriel]

Really amazing photo. Every grown up boy needs such toys.
Regards my dear friend.

Hi Frank.
A delightful photo - very colourful and sharp, and a subject that I always enjoy, trains. These old locomotives look brilliant and well cared for, and you captured them in fine pose. I like the title too. I wonder if you thought about cropping the loco off the right side and making a square photo of the other two. Not that it makes any difference, it looks great as it is. Thanks for the interesting note, too.
Regards,
Andrew

Bonjour, cher ami Frank,

Greetings!

This one is great again! I like it very much, oh, locomotives - I like them. Friends of old locomotives? Sounds good!
Greetings from sunny but not warm Russland!

Hi Frank,
Very spectacular shot with impressive composition. I like the title and the beautiful old locomotives, great nostalgic atmosphere! Have a nice weekend
George

Hello Frank,
I see from this composition and previous ones that you like me are fascinated by steam locomotives. Did you also want to be a train driver when you were growing up? A very good point of view on this engine shed. The composition is well balanced and has some interesting graphical lines. Very good clarity.

Hi Frank
Jean-Pierre

Hello Frank,
When I look at dates of the formation of such objects this always they refer the decline of the nineteenth age. Many similar engine-houses came into being in the similar time also in Wielkopolska. I remember times, when trains were pulled by engines, when on turn-tables of the engine-house was the movement as downtown of the great city. Myself I attended school average by train pulled by the steam locomotive. The excellent shot, moving distant already remembrances, transferring almost to romantic times of Edison. The beautiful work, superb realization. Great cheers!
Best regards from really autumnal Poznan,
Jurek

Hi Frank,
Great to see old roundhouse full of big steamers. Well presented half way out of the stalls. Good exposure showing details of dark surfaces well.
Kari

Wow, what a sight, I want to go there. It reminds me of the style of the German built shed in Wolsztyn, which have heard has now closed, does anyone know more details?

Bonjour Frank,
Bon weekend
Michel

Hi Frank,
These engines really radiate power and strength! Good colours with its domination of red and black. I also like the WS:s, particularly altered image #1, with all that steam!
Greetings from Gothenburg
Gunnar

Mein Traum, alle diese Dampfmaschine! So wunderschön!! Admiration!

Frank,
This is a great shot of these fine old engines. You are very right about this being a dream job! My father was a railroad man and we have spent a lot of time looking at trains and talking about the old steam engines. I would love to have the opportunity to be in the engine when one is pulling a train. I will have to put this on my list to visit on our next trip to Germany.
Your composition is great here showing this lineup of engines. The lighting and colors are great with nice sharpness and detail.
You just cant go wrong when you take photos of trains!
TFS,
Asa

A wonderful scene, Frank, full of retro interest. I might have preferred a tighter crop to concentrate the interest, but this interesting scene is sharply and well presented. Regards kevin

Hallo Frank,

Hi Frank

You chose a very good point of view. I like to see the parralelism of these rails. Amazing details and colours too. Very informative note. Good jod and thanks for sharing.
