[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
This is a view of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley a bit north of the town St. Goarshausen. This part of Rhine valley here - between Bingen/Rüdesheim and Koblenz was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in June 2002 because of its unique combination of geological, historical, cultural and industrial reasons.
As you can see the river has carved a gorge into the "Rheinisches Schiefergebirge" (Rhenish slate mountain range) which stretches from the Belgian Ardennes to Rothaargebirge in the German federal state North Rhine-Westphalia.

The gorge produces its own microclimate and has acted as a corridor for species not otherwise found in the region. Its slopes have long been terraced for agriculture, in particular viticulture which has good conditions on south-facing slopes. Most of the vineyards belong to the wine region Mittelrhein - but as you can see here a part of them has been given up. The competiton of wines from regions where machines can be used for cultivation, such as e.g. in France or Italy is too strong. Concerning taste Rhine wines, the Hock, definitely mustn't hide behind the wines of other countries ... ;-))
The river has been an important trade route into central Europe since prehistoric times and a string of small settlements has grown up along the banks. Constrained in size, many of these old towns retain a historic feel today. With increasing wealth, many castles appeared and the valley became a core region of the Holy Roman Empire where the famous Counts of Katzenelnbogen collected their unmeasurable silver treasure. It was at the centre of the Thirty Year's War, which left many of the castles in ruins, a particular attraction for today's cruise ships which follow the river.

Middle Rhine valley really is a great and romantic gorge with many many objects of interest.
The photographer right hand is taking a photo of Loreley rock ...

In the map view left hand you can see my point of view and the curves of the river.

Hi Buin,
Yes, this gorge does look very romantic, it has all of the elements of a medievil fairystory.
Lovely shot, good composition, you show many aspects of the river and the way it winds through the countryside.
Have a nice weekend.
Peter

Olá Frank, wonderful scenery, indeed. I can see that the light conditions didn't help you, but your framing is excellent with the second slope making a great diagonal. Still, there's a nice contrast bettween the sunny and shadowed parts and I like ti see the photographer in yellow. Tfs,
Have a nice weekend,
ricardo

Hi Frank,
I like this photo with the different layers of green turning blue, the curves of the river hidden behind the slopes.
Greetings from Gothenburg

Bonsoir Frank,

Ciao Buin, beautiful landscape, great POV, splendid light and colors, very well done, have a good Sunday, ciao Silvio

I heard about this place - or rather about this region. Very interesting note and, of course, photo is great again!

Greetings!
