Another impression of the Kiel Canal from a different POV. We are in the marshy lowlands of the river Eider. These lowlands being very flat, below sea level in parts are characterized by green meadows, pastures and dairy farming prevail. Since the Kiel Canal is connecting the Northern Sea and the Baltic Sea it is running through all three divisions of landscape in Schleswig-Holstein, from Brunsbüttel in the Southwest to Kiel in the East of Schleswig-Holstein. The lowlands of the river Eider is a part of the Geest, a band of moorland that forms a "central spine" between the marshlands in the West and the low hill country in the East. The Geest is composed of landscapes of different ages and diverse origins, characterized by poor soils.

The canal is formally called the Northern Sea-Baltic Sea Canal (Nord-Ostsee Kanal) and is ranked among the world's three major canals with the Suez and Panama Canals. This waterway is 98 km long and 102m wide with an 11m water-depth and has international importance. Using the Kiel-Canal instead of the way around Skagen will save an average of 250 nautical miles.

Guten Morgen Harriet!
Frank

Hello Harriet,
An amazing meeting of a ship and a tractor. An interesting composition and very fine, soft colours. A good observation. I might have considered cropping a bit of the empty foreground though.
Best wishes,
Gert

Hello Harriet,
a funny nice photo! Very unusual to see a ship and a tractor at the same time: two so different ...mmmm... kinds of transportation!:) There must be some trick: either the ship as wheels or the tractor can sail ;) Very interesting juxtaposition.
Concerning the composition, I would agree with Gert. I've made a Workshop variant... if you don't mind:)
kind regards,
Elena

Hi Harriet,
A most peculiar sight with the ship and the tractor together. The colourful containers add a new dimension to this rural landscape. Truly a different picture!
Greetings from Gothenburg

Hi Karriet,
quite a funny view with that container ship in this unusual decor. Good layering and the tractor is another important topic.
Regards, Gerrit

Hello Harriet ,
Very interesting and original picture .The tractor and the ship are well placed . The WS is better , but it's good that we can learn a lot of good photographers .
Best regards
Denis

Hi Harriet
An amusing photo of 2 contrasting forms of transport. A nice compositon - although I do think that Elena's workshop enhances all aspects of the photo. TFS, Marlene

Hi Harriet,
Good pov to show the land hidden from river and sea, I like the greenery land saperated into many layers by green tone, peaceful and relaxing environment, thanks for sharing.
Ally

Bonjour Harriet

Hello my friend from Germany!
I compliment for this artistic and impressive shot from you!
with this pov, you will feel a mighty container ship is sailing on the land if not reading your useful notes about the canal on this flat land!
I loved the soft and gentle lighting across this image with good colour
well done with thanks
greeting
Tony

Hi Harriet,

at the first look at this image I asked my self in an amazment: what is this ship doing in the middle of the green scenery of fields and forest? Only when I read your note things started to make sense. :) Brilliant choice of shooting, giving this capture a unique mystery touch with excellent balance between ship and tractor, as in sence of asymetrical simetry and in sense of different motives usually not seen in such relation. Really nice work!

Kind regards,
Jeri

Hello Harriet.
What an unusual sight. I wonder how far from the sea this location is. You juxtaposed the ship and the tractor nicely in this composition, and captured a nice gentle light and some shadow. I would crop about 60% off the bottom of the photo. Thank you for that very interesting note.
Regards,
Andrew

Hi Harriet,
Interesting viewpoint, showing just the ship and no canal. I think I'd like to see more of that ship behind bushes although they emphasize impression of ship being on the field. The tractor is well placed.
I'd prefer tighter framing by cropping from left and bottom.
Kari

Hi Harriet,
This is really an interesting picture. At first I thought that was some kind of industrial building in the distance, but then I realized it was a ship that mistakenly appears to be parked in a field. Very nice illustration of this canal. You've really captured a unique feature of this part of Germany. I like the tractor too. You've used it well to balance the bridge of the ship. Nice post!

Kate

Hallo Harriet,
Helmut

Hi Harriet,

Always fascinating to see these large ships in the middle of the meadows and the trees.
The contrast between the tractor and the ship makes the picture very original.

Hi Harriet,
Attractive rhythm given by the background trees.
But what I like especially it is this crossing between this boat of containers and this tractor. There is something surrealist in this photo with this boat which appears from the vegetation. Very well consisted, you would have been able to look a little more of contrast, if you have a software which allows to make it.
Cheers
Diane

Good evening Harriet,
I am amazed in front of the size at this boat circulating on this channel. Excellent astonishing image of a ship in full field. Very good realization. Congratulations.
Have a nice evening

Hello Harriet,
I like that ship in the middle of this beautiful countryside landscape.
Good colors and well captured photo.

Hallo Harriet,

ben fatto

Hi Harriet!

Wow, fantastic picture, unbelievable spectacle, very original photo! You had a great "eye" for this one, the way you composed the photo, really makes this ship look like floating on grass, great timing! Beautiful colours, too! Congratulations!

Hi Harriet,

A photograph really surprising… The tractor seems tiny beside this enormous container ship. I like much these gradations colours, it is very pleasant with the eye. Beautiful and original composition, Harriet cheer.

Hi Harriet!
Very impressive and humorous this little tractor trying to keep pace with the big ship.
If it wasn't for the title, one would think, looking quickly that it was some kind of radar tower with its side buildings. Great capture with these coloured dots piercing the green canvas!
Cheers.
MarieLouise.

Bonjour Harriet,
