[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
When one of my colleagues saw this image, he said only one word: Heimat! And I started reflecting on Heimat.
Heimat (Homeland, roots) is another German expression that is difficult to translate. What is its meaning? Nazis misused the word ''Heimat'' or ''Vaterland'' and for several decades after World War II, Germans rarely used these patriotic words.
The notion derives from 19th-century Romanticism, to mean the region where you grew up, your identity, where you belong. Heimat is reviving its renaissance today due to internationalism and globalization, but what do we understand today when we speak about our home? For me (living in Schleswig-Holstein), Heimat is a place like this at the Old Eider Canal, the predecessor of the Kiel Canal. Heimat is first of all water, which means the sea, the lakes, the rivers and the canals. Secondly it is the wind in the trees, on the beach and on the fields (but also the calmness!). And thirdly it is the light, especially the light of summer. And I should also mention small villages with half-timbered buildings, that make me feel at home in Denmark.
I would very much like to know what Heimat means for you.

Hello Harriet,
a very attractive photo even in the small thumbnail which I saw in the gallery :)
It's a pity the very top of the tree (in the left part of the photo) is cropped. But on the other hand, the bottom (with the reflections and water lily leaves) is beautiful, too, and is a very lovely addition to the picture!
In fact, with such views (reflections &Co), I guess, one never knows what POV is the best!... it's sometimes either the very top is cropped or the bottom...
But whatever, I like this very beautiful romantic scene... beautiful colours! At first I thought that the shadows are too dark (especially in the right part of the photo) but then I thought: if you edit the photo and make the shadows less dark, the depth of the picture will disappear. So, imho, it's very good as it is!

Concerning "Heimat"... For me (although I'm in Russia) "Heimat" = Stockholm - the "beauty on water" (although I strongly dislike cliches) :) Can't help it. I left my soul there.
best regards,
and have a nice Sunday!
Elena

Hi Harriet,
a very recognizable landscape for a man from Holland.
We have no proper word for it, Heimat; it's a great word that is stolen by the nazi's from great romantici like Heine.
I like your composition in halves. A little pity the treetop on the left is cut off.
Regards, Gerrit

Hallo Harriet,
This picture is a masterpiece, very nice scenery.
great composiiton and nice sharpness, beautiful reflections,
Georg

Bonjour Harriet

Hi Harriet,

First of all thank you for the very interesting informative note on the place. As for the photograph, cheer for this splendid reflection of which you accustom us from now. I like much the light on the lake. The resting aspect of the image is very appreciable. Pretty glance, thank you Harriet.

With all my friendships and a very good end of WE,

Hallo Harriet,

Hi Harriet,
I can really understand why you feel at home here! This is certainly a beautiful place and having passed here many times I think I understand why you like it. For me "Heimat" could very much be Värmland, from where I have posted a lot of photos. I was born there, but have no connections whatsoever with that province anymore. My present "Heimat" is undoubtly Gothenburg!
Greetings from Heimat
Gunnar

Hallo Harriet!
Man meint, die Zeit steht still.
Frank

Hello Harriet,
I am fortunate to live on a lake here in Sydney, my "Heimat" has many of the qualities you mention in your note with regard to sea, lake, light, environment. I face west, so each evening I have the sun-setting over the water in front of my house, a rare treat when you live on the east coast. Yes, Heimat, indeed.
I like your photograph very much, to me it is perfect in every respect.
It is a pleasure to sit and view it, congratulations.
Warm wishes.
Peter

Hi Harriet,
Wounderful shades of varying deep greens seen contrasting brilliantly with the pastel sky and deep blue lake.
The reflections are most tranquil in the still waters of the canal.
Regards, Tom

Hello Harriet
A beautiful photo of your Heimat but I agree with Elena in that it would be better with the top of the tree included. Marlene

Hello harriet,

very nice shot full of peace and calm.I like the reflections in the water and the amazing atmosphere of this place.VThank you for sharing and your detailed note.

Hi Harriet,
Nice to see a corner in natural blue and green colour, great reflection, relaxing and peaceful environment, good balancing of lighting between bright and dim area, good shoot.

ciao Harriet,

Hello Harriet,
An idyllic piece of world, your "Heimat". Beautiful light and colours. You have controlled the light very well. A really tranquil atmosphere and great reflections. Well done!
The simplest answer to the question of my "Heimat" would be the place where I have my roots, the southern Finland. However, if I think of the landscape, where I think as being at home, it can be a Finnish forest in all its variety, a glittering sun on the surface of the sea in the archipelago, a morning fog floating over a lake in the wilderness, or a lonely skiing track leading into the snowy forest.
Have a nice week!
Lasse

Ola Harriet,

Helmut

Hello Harriet,
Whether this picture shows a special German mood or not, I wouldn't know. It could also be almost anywhere in Scandinavia. But I find a kind of dreamy atmosphere here, and at least for me my "Heimat", the rural area where I spent my first 20 years, very often comes back to me in my dreams (although usually quite distorted).
By the way: didn't Edgar Reitz do a lot to restore the dignity of the word Heimat with his huge film trilogy?
Kindest regards,
Gert

Hi Harriet!

Bonjour Kielia,
For me Heimat evokes nothing because the German language is totally unknown me. But I like very much this photo and this green universe or water lilies mix in the reflections. It is at the same moment, cheerful, alive but also romantic and quiet.
A beautiful place to forget noises of the city.
Very well done, amicalement

Superbes couleurs Harriet,

Lieben Gruss, Ulf

Hello Harriet,

An interesting mirror image, showing this lovely location by the lakeside!
The number of boats tell me this place is used for recreational purposes, and the varied light gives life to the scene...
Rich colours and fine details in this moody capture!

Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Harriet. For me Heimat also involves water, to be more precise the Whanganui river here in New Zealand. It is the place I spent my childhood and my earliest memories are from there.
Great photo. You have captured a wonderful mood of calmness and warmth. Nice work and thanks for sharing.
Have a good weekend, Paul.

Hello Harriet,

What a rich and romantic shot.
The beauty of the deeply coloured, overhanging trees, is perfectly refected in the mirror-like water. It is so interested how these reflections are punctuated with water lily leaves. Excellent pov and dof.

It is sad the tree top is missing but to have included this might have upset the whole balance of the shot!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Harriet
Excellent scene with the green oozing all other the image. The reflections are awesome, this is very well seen and presented.
Regards
Jim

A crisp capture with reflections, deep colors and a great compostion.

Hi Harriet. An idyllic place, somewhere where one can reaffirm one's connection with something bigger than oneself. Harmonious blend of sky (light), water and vegetation. The stillness is uplifting. As for my Heimat, there is the everyday one of the eucalypts surrounding my house, the colourful parrots and various other birds that fly overhead and visit. But there is another Heimat that I carry deep inside from my childhood, when the impressions are the strongest- of the Adriatic gently lapping against the pier of my hometown, the smell of my new pencil case, the scent of lilacs and violets in Spring and ripe watermelon and figs in Summer. And the auroma of my grandmother's cooking.Regards. Klaudio.

Hi Harriet, splendid composition with fantastic colors and fascinating reflections, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hallo Harriet,
Colours and reflections are the more attractive visual elements for me here. They are in an aesthetically pleasing integration. But more interesting than this is your note, talking about your Heimat and asking us to tell you about ours. Living in a Quebecer region without land surface elevations, only 50m above the sea level, I miss the mountains of my Heimat (Minas Gerais, Brazil). My Heimat is the fresh and dry air, the bright early mornings, with sun still hidden by the mounts... and my Heimat is also people from my Minas Gerais, their mood ;-)
Thanks for sharing and making us share our feelings,
MCV

Hello Harriet!
The image is superbly interesting because I really like the reflection and this mixture of green and blue, just broken by the center division of the photograph! Very pleasant, very calming!

Hello Harriet
A very nice picture of the countryseide, with strong light contrasts, which has been effectively exposed. Like the reflection in the deep blue water & the leaves in the FG. I also live far away from my home town & when I see pictures from there, I also feel a strong sense of nostalgia..maybe that's what is expressed when you say Heimat

Hi Harriet,

now this is a scenery where can we relax our eyes from all the ugliness in the world. Trees and their reflections create a vortex like appearance...an optical illuison of moving. It draws us in...like being hypnotise by nature's beauty. Wonderful photo!
About my Heimat...I do not think I found it yet...

My warmest regards,
