[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
Emkendorf manor is located between Kiel and Rendsburg where a lot of interesting trees are growing in a beautiful park. This horse chestnut is threatened by the leaf miner (Cameraria ohridella) that was first observed in Macedonia in northern Greece in the late 1970's. In 1989, it appeared unexpectedly in Austria and has since spread throughout central and Eastern Europe. The rate of spread in the UK (40-60 km/year) is similar to that seen on the continent. As you can see on the photo it causes leaf damage, as the larvae mine within the horse chestnut leaves. Severely damaged leaves shrivel and turn brown by late summer and fall early, well before normal leaf fall in the autumn. Continued and extensive attack by the leaf miner is likely to put the trees under stress, which could reduce a trees resistance to more serious diseases. The moths emerge in the spring after over-wintering as a chrysalis within the fallen leaves beneath the tree. The best treatment therefore, if practical, is to remove as many leaves as possible to reduce next year’s attack. Mild winters are also allowing them to survive and spread each year. Horse chestnuts are not a tree for the future.

Hi Harriet,
we have the same problem with the chesnuts in Holland. This year was better than past year though.
Well composed photo. There is an overexposure on the top.
Regards, Gerrit

Hello Harriet

Frank

Hi Harriet,
Informative note and very interesting.
Lovely shot of this tree suffering from this blight. I have not heard of the leaf miner but it is possible to see from your photograph the damage it does to these beautiful trees.
Very nice setting, the tree with the dappled light on the trunk and the tranquil pond is very pretty. Very nice composition and POV.
Thank you for sharing this lovely shot.
Have an enjoyable weekend.
Warm regards
Peter

You have chosen the perfect branch, shapely and interesting. I like the framing and the colors are soothing. A very beautiful picture. TFS

Hello Harriet,
my first impression: the tree branch looks like a huge arm with a hand and fingers, trying to reach for the water as if it is very thirsty. Excellent capture!
Trees do suffer, too.. be it leaf miners or human beings... :-/
best regards,
Elena

Hello Harriet,
Really informative photo and note. It's sad if these beautiful trees don't survive.
Have a great weekend!

Eino

hi Harriet

When shooting light+shadow scene like this, especially against the lightit is always difficult to maintain perfect exposure with OE at some part of the sky. Here the top seems to be so.

But the color is yet to show autumn here. tfs

Hey Harriet,

A good photo with nice (although an illusion of) autumnal colors. Did not know that about the chestnut tree (and the leaf miner), so also thanks for an informative note. Otherwise quite nicely composed, although in place too thick for my taste. Still good job.

Best regards.

Bonjour, mon amie Harriet,

Hi Harriet,

The very beautiful ones and pleasant lights in this composition autumnal, I like in particular the light luminosity on the tree trunk. A very beautiful season the autumn. With the splendid weather that there was this morning on Yvelines, I could make beautiful photograph which I will publish soon. Pretty composition, thank you Harriet.

With all my friendships and very good Sunday,

Jean-Charles

Bonjour Harriet,

Bonjour Harriet,
It is a very beautiful photo with this long branch which comes down as to touch the water. The light is very well got in the foliage and on the lake.
The Cameraria ohridella is also present in Paris regrettably and from the beginning of August, the leave of chestnut trees begin to dry. I saw trees without any leaves today, as in winter.
It's terrible.
Thank's for this note to,
amicalement
Diane

Ola Harriet ,

Hello Harriet,

I agree, the autumn colours are scarce and the leaves seem to drop before the colour arrive..!
In my place the autumn palette this year is more rich than for many years, and they say weather conditions are influencing this process...
This is a fine backlight capture with good details, a well composed presentation!

Greetings,
Pablo -

ciao Harriet,
complimenti
buona giornata
maurizio

Hej Harriet,
Its a good example of how amazingly the nature works, even if we dont always understand why..
I like the backlight and the way you made the tree come forward.
Ha en bra dag!

Hi Harriet, we have the same problem hier at Holland unfortunaly. About the photo you choose difficult conditions with the backlight and there for the sky and water reflection become overexposud a lower f/ and longer exposure would maybe help to get it better.
Best regards
