Here I show you a radar station on top of Wasserkuppe, the highest mountain of the German low mountain range Rhön, which spans the today's federal states Hessen, Thuringia and Bavaria.
During the Cold War the Military of the United States built this radar dome (Radom) here, because the frontier to the German Democratic Republic, the sphere of influence of the Soviet Union, ran only some kilometers from here. The whole summit of Wasserkuppe was a military safe area with a lot of barbed wire, floodlighs, watchdogs and warning plates - in the middle of a very popular tourist's destination. Hiking along these fences always again was a bit frightening.
In 1978 the US army turned this station over to the German Bundeswehr. In 1998 military use of this summit was given up. There are plans to reintegrate this former military area on the very top of the mountain (950,2 m) in the natural landscape there.
Also a clubhouse for the paraglider club and a function room for events and exhibitions are projected there - in the radar dome!

Hi Frank! well done picture and interesting story of this station! a radar becoming a paraglider dome!
Also in my place are here are many memories of the cold war: big barracks empty and becoming archeology.
Ciao... from cloudy Greece, today I am in Corfu!

Hallo Frank,

Achim

Hi Frank,

Good thing I read the note because I thought I was looking at a giant football! The sky is beautiful in this composition and create good contrast against the radar. Nice perspective and layering of this composition. Thanks from Calgary :-)

Hello Frank,
A good capture of one of these famous golf balls that were erected across Western Europe at the height of the Cold War. It stands out proud against the lovely polarised sky. The image has great light and clarity. Interesting note.

Hi Frank,
The asymmetrically placed globe contributes to a well balanced composition. Also the datk green fence in this angle is a fine element in your picture. Interesting note as well!

Hello Frank,
A good upwards POV and a non-centred composition. Good light and colours with excellent sharpness. Thanks for the interesting note.

It looks like a huge ball, but it isn't, alas.
Fine presentation, no doubt.
Regards my dear friend.

Hello,

Oh yes, and there were also Nuclear Mines down there, deep in the earth, to prevent tank armies from advancing to Paris and La-Manche. Pretty mad, if someone asks ME.
Great photo! Quite nice-looking radar. Hope it really never will be used again, as well as those small nuclear things will never be put again in the earth, as well.
Greetings! + 10 and rain-rain-rain all day!

Hello Frank,
In different places of our countries is many similar remaining objects after the period of Cold War. Big boys played into the war with the cost of citizens of societies which not necessarily wanted these small wars. Traces however remaining as many other from considerably earlier periods in history of our small and delicate planet.
Best regards from cold, but solar Poznan,
Jurek

Frank,
the photo is very good in quality, wonderful color and light with great composition. What is more important here is the and historical purpose of this place and information you provide in your note. Thanks for your effort.
