History:

The Princes of Salm are descended from the Earls of Salm, who had the position of self-governing lords under the German emperor. Evidence of the existence of this dynasty can be traced back as far as the 11th century. In 1623, Earl Philipp Otto of Salm was elevated to the rank of a prince with an hereditary territory. So, the Princes of Salm became sovereign princes and therefore got a seat and a vote in the council of lords of the empire. By marriage, they acquired the territory and rule of Anholt in Westphalia in 1645. They alternately resided in the Principality of Salm with its capital Senones in Lorraine (France), in the territory of Anholt with its residence Anholt Castle, in the Duchy of Hoogstraten with its main residence Hoogstraten Castle and in the county that was theirs by rights of their earldom with its main residences Kyrburg and Rheingrafenstein.

In the marriage between Princess Dorothea of Salm (1702 - 1751) and Earl Nicolaus Leopold of Salm, Duke of Hoogstraten (1701 - 1770), both branches of the Salm dynasty were united. Earl Nicolaus Leopold followed his father-in-law, Prince Ludwig Otto of Salm (1674 - 1738), as the sovereign Prince of Salm in 1738. The emperor bestowed the hereditary title of Prince of Salm-Salm on Prince Nicolaus Leopold in 1743. From then on, the head of the family of Salm has called himself Prince of Salm, Prince of Salm-Salm and Earl.

The French Revolution and the wars led by Napoleon I. (1769 - 1821) that followed it led to several subsequent waves of political changes. The Princes of Salm-Salm lost their sovereign Principality Salm in 1793. As a result of the peace treaty of Lunéville (1801), they also lost their self-governing territories west of the river Rhine which they ruled as earls. In the "Reichsdeputationshauptschluß" treaty of Regensburg (1803), which regulated the compensation of the worldly rulers affected when the territories west of the river Rhine were ceded to France, the now secular administrative districts of Ahaus and Bocholt were allocated to the Princes of Salm-Salm and those of Salm-Kyrburg. The seat of government of the newly founded Principality Salm was established in Bocholt. In 1810, however, this principality was annexed by France. The sovereignty of the Principality Salm and the territory of Anholt was irrevocably revoked at the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Both territories became part of the state of Prussia.

Since then, Anholt Castle has remained the main residence of the Princes of Salm and Salm-Salm. It is one of the few castles which are still privately owned today. The head of the family is Prince Carl Philipp of Salm and Salm-Salm (born in 1933), who also bears the title of an earl.

The big tower dating from the 12th century has been the characteristic feature of Anholt Castle over the centuries. The castle was built on oak trunks, a lattice made from wood and foundations of stone. It was extended in the 14th century and later again, during the baroque period, it was built into an impressive residence.

Towards the end of World War II, the whole castle was gravely damaged (about 70 per cent of the buildings were destroyed). Therefore, permanent residence there was no longer possible.

In the course of the post-war rebuilding, Anholt Castle was turned into a museum on initiative of Prince Nickolaus Leopold of Salm-Salm (1906 - 1988).
The main building was opened to the public. It housed the remaining stock (albeit to some extend damaged), which had been accumulated in the historical rooms and halls over the centuries and, even then, formed a remarkabled collection of art.

As soon as 1966 the museum, also containing the library and the archives of the Princes of Salm-Salm, was founded.

Prince Carl Philipp of Salm-Salm had further thorough reconstruction work carried out in the years 1990 to 2000 in order to renovate historical rooms as well as a large number of historically significant pieces of art. In due course, these will also become part of the museum.

Hi Vanessa !

Nice composition, in this picture, with a nice reflect in the water !
Thanks !

Bonsoir Vanessa

Groetjes, Henk

Hello Vanessa!
I'm a total fan of reflections and whenever I see one in the thumbnail, I just feel compelled to open it up! Not always I have a good surprise, but when I do, I just have to comment on it!
I like you example, with a beautiful architecture, very good light management, sharpness, pov and composition!
TFS - Congratulations!
Best regards,
Neyvan
