Photographer's Note
The photo shows a typical beech forest in spring at Wulfshagen near Kiel.
Ancient beech forests covered 40 per cent of mainland Europe 6,500 years ago. Today unspoilt lowland beech forests are found nowhere in the world but Germany and many of the trees are centuries old. Their dead wood and natural hollows offer ideal habitats for bats, hole-nesting birds and other animals, and thereby promote biodiversity. The beech forests are home to around 10,000 different species of animals, plants and fungi. Walkers and nature lovers will find a peaceful haven.
The waterhole however is man-made, it is a bomb crater, a remnant of world war II, partially overgrown during the last 68 years. Because of its status as a naval port and as production site for submarines, Kiel was heavily bombed by the Allies during World War II.

Hello Harriet,
I like very much the way the "waterhole" is placed in the frame, the reflections on its brown water and the delightful, clear view into the forest. This is a careful and lovely composition lit in a marvellous, well balanced way. I love the colours and atmosphere but who would have guessed the story of the creation of this ordinary pond so many years ago! Well done and thank you!
All the best,
Ourania

Hello Harriet,
A really tranquil scene; it's hard to link this with a war background.
You have used a good pov, where the line of the waterhole follows a r/l diagonal across the frame, leaving a strong f/g triangle to anchor the shot. The reflections in the water and the shadows on the far bank are lovely details, adding depth and interest to the shot.
Have a lovely w/e,
Bev :-)

Hello Harriet
A different shot from you today, not a seascape in sight. But water still features predominantly !
A restful scene, that belies the story you tell. It is hard to begin to imagine what it must have been like. ( I have spent some little time exploring the battle sites of WW1; much the same story, peaceful beauty hiding shocking stories..
But your picture: it works well, the dappled sunlight providing a foil for the main detail of your post, the shell hole and its dark depths...
kind regards
Martin.
PS thanks for the comment on my gallery, flattering indeed.
B.t.w., we will not be coming over this spring time - too much works against us really. But next year....

Hallo Harriet!

Buon WE mia cara amica.

Hi Harriet,
Very good note (as always !) on beech forests in Germany. Your post shows how you can arouse interest in what seems to be a rather ordinary wood.
I too like exploring the surroundings of my house and never tire of it !
Strangely enough, We have a bomb hole in the nearby wood, but somehow the water seems to have dried out of it. However, water lilies grow in it !
In your picture, I like the reflection of the blue sky and of the trees. Good management of light in the forest, which is not always easy, perhaps a little easier before the leaves sprout !
Have a good weekend.
Marie-Louise.

Hello Harriet,
First of all, a big thank you for your sensitive and informative notes, I've read it with great interest. I strongly think that in order to appraise an art object the artist must find a way to build empathy with the viewer. Your notes highly achive this. And I believe the most important aspect of this platform is this. Regarding your photo, I liked your low level POV focusing on the man made! crater. It is fascinating to see that the world we live in keeps spinning against all odds and turns almost all adversity to opportunities. Thanks for reminding us the hope that still exists for our world. Have a nice Sunday.

Hello Harriet,
I think I have only walked in a beech forest in southern Sweden as a child but I remember the special light and the "clean" ground, everything so different from the dense and dark forests where I grew up. So this is a pleasant view, which as usual is accompanied by an interesting note giving us also a short lesson in the modern history of manmade waterholes in northern Germany.
Kind regards,
Gert

hello Harriet,
this perfectly compliments your note (or vis versa). The waterhole a reminder of war in a peaceful setting.Your note immediately brought to mind a recording made during the second world war I heard recently, of a lark singing against a background drone of Lancaster bomber. It was beautiful and poignant.
Here the water, seta round with trees and their reflections reminds me of the birch woods of Deeside, Aberdeenshire. The atmosphere is so similar. You have catured this well and the diagonal line of the water is helpful compositionally.
best regards,
Bev

Hi Harriet,
Good frame to show a little pond at the ground of forest, it is function as a mirror and reflecting well the view from surrounding environemnt, indeed growing of human population lead to the extinction of some other species, informative note, distinct image, good shoot.

I can imagine how damage the bombs created in your country in that time, including in the natural landscape. I am happy nature is hiding the damages too, I hope there wasn't more bombs forgot in the underground how we can see sometimes in your towns. few months ago a city of our seashore discovered 2 big naval bombs (from II war) in the middle of the city, for some reason they were buried there and forget and the city growth arrived in the place. nice image showing the place and its details. TFS,
