Photographer's Note

Might have been taken a few days ago, but is in fact two years old.
The maar lakes of the Eifel uplands are water filled calderas and thus of volcanic origin. Laacher See volcano erupted in 10930 B.C. Pumice was transported by winds as far as to Italy.

Laacher See is a centre of cultural and religious life in northern Rhineland-Palatinate due to its adjacent monastery of Maria Laach, the three steeples of which you can see in far distance.
