Due to the straightening of the Rhein in the 19th century, most of the marsh landscape was destroyed. Many species of animals and plants, which had established themselves here, have become extinct over the past 150 years. Between Oberhausen and Wittenweier extends a region of over 1,600 hectares that escaped all those changes– Taubergießen.
Taubergießen, to the North of Freiburg, a Nature Reserve, called the last of the virgin landscapes in the upper Rhein-region, a rare natural treasure where a perfect symbiosis between flora and fauna takes place. You can find rare kingfishers and herons, wild geese and cormorants and other rare varieties of animals and plants. You can go on hikes, or boat trips through the region on old fishing boats. Only fishermen from Kappel and Rust are allowed to take people for rides in these flat boats on the Internal Rhein, which is the only way to explore this wonderful Nature Reserve.
This image shows one of these flat fishing boats under the rain and chained to a tree.
If you are in the area, take your time and take this trip as I did (don’t forget your camera). You can contact a fisherman for a trip through the Cityhall Kappel (Tel. 07822/8630) |

Das es so alte Boote noch gibt, hätt ich nicht gedacht. Tolles Bild!
The focus is just right, it captures the serenity of the moment. Makes me wish I were there!
