The first representative building of the Heidelberger Castle was erected under Prince Elector Ruprecht III. Later during the 16th and 17th century the fortress was turned into a castle and two representative palace buildings were added. Today, they are considered to be two of the most important buildings in German architectural history.
The Castle and its garden were destroyed during the 30 Years' War, by French troops; then a lightning struck the Castle in 1764. In the centuries that followed, the Castle was misused as a quarry - castle stones helped to build new houses in Heidelberg. In 1800 Count Charles de Graimberg made effort to preserve it. Today, its hall is used for festivities, e.g. dinner banquets, balls and theatre performances.
The "Hortus Palatinus" the Castle Gardens once considered as being the "Eighth Wonder of the World", was created the by the famous garden architect Salomon de Caus as homage to Heidelberg's surroundings. Left of the remains of the "Great Grotto", a pond contains the enormous sandstone sculpture of a resting "Father Rhine", whose picture you can contemplate here.
