Bad Kissingen, located on the Fränkische Saale River, in the Bavarian Rhön mountain region and was recognized as early as the 16th century as a place of natural healing. It became in1814 part of the Kingdom of Bavaria. Turning during the 19th century into one of the most fashionable spas in Europe. In 1883 the predicate 'Bad' (spa) was added to the name Kissingen. The spa's parks, gardens and the 19th- and early 20th-century buildings reflect its former status as a watering hole for the titled, rich and famous. Henry Kissinger's ancestors derived their name from this town.
The towns name derives from Old German words meaning"sour bubbly water".The mineral water of the town fits that description.
Kissingen was producing salt in the early Middle Ages. In the 16th century, when Kissingen belonged to territory governed by the Bishops of Würzburg, the salt-works was leased to a private entrepreneur and new technology was introduced. For instance, the Kissingen salt-works were the first to run a graduation system on a large scale in order to enrich low-grade brine.
The graduation system was several Kilometer long. The brine from the surrounding was pumped by the station you see in the picture to the top of the graduation system where it concentrated by evaporation and later heated to gain the salt.
One thing you should not forget if you go to Bad Kissingen is to try the local Franken-Weissweine (truly dry German white wines).
