Christmas time steam special between Berlin Lichtenberg and Potsdam passing through Berlin Wannsee station.

BR 52 'Kriegslok' was a wartime engine class that was optimized for efficient production, stripped from any fancy stuff. Over 6000 were build in many different factories between 1942 and 1945. But this class outlived it's expectations serving decades on hard work, and quite a few are preserved in working order.

Shot at ISO-800 with continuous shooting mode. Cropped from 22 mm. No colour corrections except a little saturation for the sky. Reddish tones come from sunset that this train runs against. Special thanks for Henk Meijer (Floydian) for inspiration with his panning shots.

Hi Kari
Attractive colours for this magnificent steam machine.
I think the sharpness of the picture is not very good due to motion blur. The panning can't run very good because your are not perpendicular with the subject.
Cheers
JP

Hi Kari,
I see you're back to your favourite subject. I love the atmosphere coming from that red glow and I even get the impression that we can see the reflection of the setting sun near the center of this old steam engine. I agree with JP that the panning effect is not at its best given your POV, but having tried it myself, I know it's not easy to match the quality of Henk's shots.
Have a nice day.
Brigitte

Hi Kari,
You told me you did some panning on the trains and to be honest i expected something else. A fast running train through a landscape.
It's difficult, very difficult. I know some people who gave up after 100 images. Well, maybe i took more than 1000 images before i got it. With other words, it cost me years. This one is far from perfect, there is to much blur on the train. I am looking for at least one single point of sharpness, than it would be good, but it seems there isn't any.
I am glad i could inspire you, a great honer when people say that to me, i really appreciate that. So please, keep on trying, one day you will succeed in high quality panning shots. 1/40 seems to be to slow for a train, but of course it all depends on how fast he is moving. Here it's difficult because he is coming towards you, that makes it even more difficult, even i can't do that at 1/40 on a moving train ;-)
Regards, Henk

Hi Kari
Very beautiful train
I like the blur because it shows the movement
Happy new year
Nick

Hi Kari,
It is a difficult shot, which you have executed with good skill and which has given you a great result. The image has a strong dynamism, you have worked very well the exposure and the colors of the sunset are specially agreeable for its warm tones.
I like, is a composition with an spectacular graphical effect.
Best regards,
Josep

Great shot, difficult in action

Hi Kari,
You seem to have panicked a little. However, you captured it somehow or other in dim light.
I have heard that twelvefold heading including this BR 52 8177-9 run at Wolsztyn.
Have a nice day, Hisashi

Bonjour Kari,
une photo très particulière, qui manque intentionnellement de netteté, sans doute pour donner un petit effet de mouvement.
J'aime beaucoup ses couleurs chaudes.
Best regards.
Daniel.

Hello Kari
Although it's a little blur, i like this photo much.
Nice POV and colors.
Regards

Hi Kari. Great photo. The blurred BG and diagonal composition give this shot a very dynamic feel. Good colours also. Thanks for sharing.
All the best for Oh Eight, Paul.

Great colors, but I think picture is a little bit to much out of focus. This setting is worth to go there once more in try again. Just set up higher shutter speed...even in panning shots main object should be more in fokus

I really like this shot. Atmosphere is nice. Makes me think of the polar express. Just want to grab pj's, a great christmas story book and hop on for a ride.
I really like trains and fun to photograph but very tricky.
Nicely done
